Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Fire Inspections Specialist II to join our team at the City of Minneapolis. As a key member of our Fire Inspection Services team, you will be responsible for conducting complex fire and life safety inspections of commercial, industrial, and institutional facilities, as well as multi-unit residential properties.

Key Responsibilities
  • Evaluate and review permits relative to applicable City of Minneapolis codes, standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Coordinate and inspect complex nuisance complaints.
  • Verify compliance with Minneapolis Code of Ordinance and the Minnesota State Fire Code.
  • Investigate and resolve complex commercial and residential nuisance complaints.
  • Interpret MSFC, NFPA Standards, and recognize, record, and develop solutions to abate deficiencies.
  • Identify approved construction methods and materials related to fire safety.
  • Calculate occupant loads and identify occupancy factors related to various occupancy classifications.
  • Interpret code requirements and recognize building uses that fall within each occupancy classification.
  • Evaluate a building's area, height, occupancy classification, and construction types pursuant to applicable codes and standards.
  • Apply applicable codes and standards to recognize problematic fire and life safety systems.
  • Analyze the egress elements of a building or portion of a building.
  • Evaluate hazardous conditions involving equipment processes and operations relative to fire protection practices.
  • Evaluate occupancy requirements and emergency evacuation plans relative to fire safety programs.
  • Evaluate and compare submitted plans and procedures with adopted City of Minneapolis codes and standards.
  • Evaluate and verify compliance for storage, handling, and use of flammable and combustible liquids.
  • Appear before the Board of Appeals and in court as necessary.
  • Attend and actively participate in all required training sessions, seminars, and classes specific to job performance requirements.
  • Maintain workspace, City vehicles, and equipment in operative condition at all times.
  • Assist and instruct lower-level inspectors in code application, interpretations, and office procedures.
  • Assist citizens and other agency personnel with code interpretations and information when requested.
Requirements
  • Associate Degree in Fire Science, Building Inspection Technology, or equivalent.
  • Three years of related experience in enforcing Minnesota State Fire Codes and National Fire Protection Association Codes and Standards.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Minnesota Fire Inspector II Certification within three months of employment.
Selection Process

The selection process will consist of one or more of the following steps: a rating of relevant education and experience (100%). It is essential that your application show all the relevant education and experience you possess. This information will be used to determine which candidates will proceed in the selection process. A submitted application is also used to verify the answers to any supplemental questions. Only those candidates who attain a passing score (70%) on each step in the selection process will be placed on the eligible list.

Background Check

The City has determined that a criminal background check and/or qualifications check may be necessary for certain positions with this job title. Applicants may be required to sign an informed consent form allowing the City to obtain their criminal history and/or verify their qualifications in connection with the position sought.

Drug and Alcohol Testing

All job applicants must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test once a conditional offer of employment has been made. Applicants will be required to sign a notification and consent form prior to undergoing drug and alcohol testing.

Union Representation

This position is represented by a collective bargaining agreement between the City of Minneapolis and the AFSCME General Unit.
