Fire Inspections Specialist II

Join the City of Minneapolis, MN team as a Fire Inspections Specialist II. This role involves conducting complex fire and life safety inspections of commercial, industrial, and institutional facilities, as well as multi-unit residential properties. You will verify, document, and enforce compliance with Minneapolis Code of Ordinance and the Minnesota State Fire Code.
Key Responsibilities:- Evaluate and review permits relative to applicable City of Minneapolis codes, standards, policies, and procedures.
- Coordinate and inspect complex nuisance complaints.
- Valuate the operational readiness of fire & life safety systems to determine if they are in compliance with City of Minneapolis applicable codes and standards.
- Investigate and resolve complex commercial and residential nuisance complaints.
- Interpret MSFC, NFPA Standards, recognize, record, and develop solutions to abate deficiencies.
- Identify approved construction methods and materials related to fire safety, read and interpret construction plans and specifications, educate, conduct research, make decisions, recognize problems, and resolve conflicts.
- Calculate occupant loads, identify occupancy factors related to various occupancy classifications, using measuring tools, and read plans and use a calculator.
- Interpret code requirements and recognize building uses that fall within each occupancy classification.
- Identify building construction with emphasis on fire-rated construction, evaluation of construction methods and associated assemblies.
- Evaluate a building's area, height occupancy classification, and construction types pursuant with applicable codes and standards.
- Apply applicable codes and standards to recognize problematic fire and life safety systems; fire protection systems, implications, and hazards associated with system operations, installations, acceptance testing, and reports.
- Analyze the egress elements of a building or portion of a building, given observations made during field inspections. Calculate egress requirements, read plans, and make decisions related to determining a compliant egress system.
- Evaluate hazardous conditions involving equipment processes, and operations relative to fire protection practices, fire behavior made during field inspections.
- Evaluate occupancy requirements and emergency evacuation plans relative to fire safety programs, special event crowd control, and assist with implementation and development.
- Evaluate and compare submitted plans and procedures with adopted City of Minneapolis codes and standards.
- Evaluate and verify compliance for storage, handling, and use of flammable and combustible liquids, gases, properties, hazards, material safety data sheets, and safe handling practice.
- Appear before the Board of Appeals and in court as necessary.
- Attend and actively participate in all required training sessions, seminars, and classes specific to job performance requirements.
- Maintain workspace, City vehicles, and equipment in operative condition at all times.
- Assists and instructs lower-level inspectors in code application, interpretations, and office procedures.
- Assist citizens and other agency personnel with code interpretations and information when requested, prepares written documentation, creates forms and checklists addressing key inspection issues, and designs and maintains filing system for the division.
- Associate Degree in Fire Science, Building Inspection Technology, or equivalent, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Three years of related experience in enforcing Minnesota State Fire Codes and National Fire Protection Association Codes and Standards.
- Valid Driver's License.
- Minnesota Fire Inspector II Certification within three months of employment.
