Position Overview:

This role reports directly to the Facilities Manager and operates with a high degree of autonomy. The incumbent is empowered to set priorities for the cleaning unit, modify cleaning protocols and products for optimal outcomes, and reallocate staff resources as necessary. The position entails overseeing custodial staff responsible for the cleanliness of buildings, furnishings, equipment, and surrounding areas. This includes both routine and specialized cleaning tasks, determining work processes, assigning duties, inspecting completed work, and making decisions regarding hiring or termination. The supervisor will conduct performance evaluations, approve leave requests, and manage the inventory and distribution of cleaning supplies. This role is crucial in ensuring high-quality custodial services and adherence to timelines, as well as training and mentoring subordinate staff while assessing the overall effectiveness of the cleaning unit. Additionally, the supervisor will provide administrative support to the Facilities Manager, tracking and maintaining unit metrics for upper management.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain accurate inventory records for custodial supplies and equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with current housekeeping standards across all facilities and report any deficiencies to the Facilities Manager.
  • Supervise and guide custodial personnel, including training new employees in cleaning tasks and equipment usage.
  • Evaluate and assign cleaning tasks to team members based on their skills and the needs of the facility.
  • Ensure all custodial staff adhere to established work schedules.
  • Operate state vehicles to distribute custodial supplies to various locations.
  • Participate in training sessions related to new cleaning equipment and solutions.
  • Perform general janitorial duties and maintain custodial equipment as needed.
  • Report maintenance issues and maintain required custodial logs and standards.
  • Complete other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Knowledge:

  • Understanding of cleaning procedures, sanitation, and safety protocols.
  • Familiarity with the operation of powered cleaning equipment.
  • Knowledge of cleaning agents and their chemical interactions.
  • Ability to model best practices for new employees.
  • Basic understanding of grounds maintenance and plant care.
  • Awareness of building security procedures.
  • Knowledge of cleaning supplies management.

Skills:

  • Proficient in the use and maintenance of industrial cleaning equipment.
  • Ability to apply effective cleaning methods and techniques.
  • Skill in safe lifting and handling of heavy objects.
  • Effective communication skills for completing required documentation.

Abilities:

  • Capable of safely disposing of hazardous materials.
  • Ability to follow both oral and written instructions.
  • Physical capability to handle objects weighing over 25 pounds frequently.
  • Ability to work in environments with varying conditions, including dirt and odors.
  • Effective time management skills.
  • Ability to train others in cleaning operations and equipment usage.
  • Maintain positive working relationships.
  • Capability to coach and develop staff, emphasizing continuous improvement practices.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

This position necessitates the use of a vehicle as an essential function. All employees driving for state business must possess a valid driver's license and complete necessary training. Compliance with driving record checks is mandatory. Employees using personal vehicles for state duties must maintain required liability insurance.
