Position Overview:

This role is under the supervision of the Facilities Manager and operates with a degree of autonomy. The incumbent is empowered to set priorities for the cleaning unit, modify cleaning methods and products for optimal outcomes, and reallocate staff resources as necessary. The primary responsibility includes overseeing custodial staff engaged in the sanitation of buildings, furnishings, equipment, and surrounding areas. This includes both routine and specialized cleaning tasks; determining work methods, assigning duties, inspecting completed work, making hiring or termination recommendations, conducting performance evaluations, approving leave requests, and managing the inventory and distribution of cleaning supplies. This position is also accountable for ensuring high-quality custodial services and adherence to job completion timelines, alongside training and supervising subordinate personnel and assessing the overall effectiveness of the cleaning unit. Furthermore, this role provides administrative assistance to the Facilities Manager, maintaining and monitoring unit metrics for upper management. The position may also require performing utility work as needed.

Key Responsibilities:

- Administrative Functions: Maintain accurate inventory records of custodial supplies; process supply requests and equipment needs. Ensure that current housekeeping standards are upheld across all facilities and report any deficiencies to the Direct Manager.

- Supervision of Custodial Staff: Oversee and guide custodial personnel. Train new hires in cleaning tasks and equipment usage. Evaluate, coordinate, and assign cleaning responsibilities to team members based on their skills and needs. Ensure all custodial staff adhere to established work schedules.

- Vehicle Operation: Operate state vehicles to distribute custodial supplies to various locations. Participate in training related to new equipment or cleaning solutions and current standards. Assist in maintaining the required services of state equipment.

- Janitorial Duties: Assume responsibility for general janitorial and custodial tasks. Clean and maintain custodial equipment as necessary. Coordinate floor cleaning schedules with contracted vendors and assist with funding requests.

- Reporting and Documentation: Report maintenance issues and maintain required custodial logs and standards for custodial closets.

- Additional Duties: Perform other related tasks as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Knowledge:
- Cleaning procedures, sanitation, and safety protocols.
- Operation of powered cleaning equipment.
- Understanding of cleaning agents and chemical interactions.
- Role-modeling for new staff.
- Basic groundskeeping techniques and plant maintenance.
- Building security protocols.
- Storage and rotation of cleaning supplies.

Skills:
- Proficient in the use and maintenance of industrial cleaning equipment.
- Application of effective cleaning methods and techniques.
- Ability to position oneself safely when lifting heavy objects.
- Competence in reading, writing, and effective communication to complete daily paperwork.

Abilities:
- Safe disposal of hazardous materials.
- Follow both oral and written instructions.
- Capability to exert physical effort in handling objects over 25 pounds frequently.
- Ability to push, pull, bend, twist, and lift objects over 25 pounds.
- Capacity to work in environments with dirt, odors, noise, and extreme weather conditions.
- Effective time management skills.
- Train others in the operation of cleaning equipment and chemicals.
- Maintain positive working relationships.
- Ability to coach and develop staff, including implementing continuous improvement practices.

Pre-Employment Requirements:
This position requires the operation of a vehicle as an essential function. Employees must possess a valid driver's license appropriate for the vehicle class, complete all necessary training, and pass required driving record checks. The license must be current and not suspended or revoked. Employees driving on state business must maintain acceptable driving records and complete all required driver training. Those using personal vehicles for state business must maintain the required liability insurance.
