GENERAL OVERVIEW OF POSITION AND RESPONSIBILITIES
In this role, you will safeguard lives and property by actively participating in firefighting, emergency medical services, hazardous materials management, and fire safety initiatives. Responsibilities include maintaining fire and emergency medical services equipment, vehicles, and facilities. The position requires significant physical effort and exposure to health and safety risks. You will primarily report to a Fire/Lieutenant and then to the Fire/EMS Captain, but during emergency situations, you will follow the chain of command and report to the incident commander or designated sector commander.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED
You will operate under the general guidance and direction of the Fire/EMS Lieutenant.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED
While not a supervisory role, you may assist in coordinating, instructing, or overseeing the work of new team members as assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The essential functions of this position may include but are not limited to:
  • Executing firefighting tasks, including driving fire apparatus, operating pumps, laying hoses, and engaging in fire suppression, containment, and extinguishment activities.
  • Providing emergency medical assistance, such as administering basic and advanced life support during fires, vehicle accidents, hazardous materials incidents, and other emergencies.
  • Participating in training drills and educational sessions related to firefighting, emergency medical services, hazardous materials, and related topics.
  • Receiving and dispatching fire calls and alarms, utilizing radio and communication equipment.
  • Engaging in inspections of buildings, hydrants, and other structures as part of fire prevention efforts.
  • Conducting general maintenance of facilities and equipment, including cleaning, minor repairs, and upkeep of the station grounds.
  • Assisting in the development of plans for special assignments, including emergency preparedness and training programs.
  • Delivering community programs on safety, medical, and fire prevention topics.
  • Carrying out salvage operations, such as removing debris and managing water damage.
  • Maintaining communication with the public, department officials, and other city representatives regarding fire department activities.
NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Attending conferences and meetings to stay informed about current trends in the field; representing the Fire/EMS department in various local, county, and state meetings.
  • Performing additional duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Extensive knowledge of modern fire suppression and prevention techniques, as well as emergency medical service protocols and equipment.
  • Proficiency in the operation of relevant tools and equipment.
  • Ability to apply firefighting and emergency medical techniques effectively.
  • Capacity to perform strenuous physical activities during emergencies and training sessions.
  • Ability to remain composed and effective in high-pressure situations; capable of following instructions and communicating clearly.
  • Familiarity with the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) incident command system.
  • Understanding of fire protection methods and applicable city ordinances.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Coursework in fire science or medical studies is preferred.
  • Any combination of education and experience deemed appropriate by the employer.
CERTIFICATION(S) AND LICENSE(S)
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Class B Non-commercial driver's license within one year of employment.
  • Must maintain a current Kansas Paramedic license and CPR certification at the time of employment.
PRE-EMPLOYMENT TESTING
Successful candidates will undergo pre-employment testing, including:
  • Criminal history background checks.
  • Physical Capacity Profile - Level 3.
  • Drug screening.
  • Alcohol testing.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND CONDITIONS
This position involves working in various environments, including office, vehicle, and outdoor settings, under all weather conditions. You will frequently face emergency situations that require quick thinking and physical exertion.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL FUNCTIONS
The physical demands of this role include the ability to perform medium work, requiring the exertion of 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally and 10 to 25 pounds frequently.
  • Engaging in firefighting tasks, rescue operations, and emergency response activities under challenging conditions.
  • Wearing personal protective equipment and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) while performing duties.
  • Climbing stairs and ladders while carrying equipment and tools.
  • Responding to unpredictable emergency situations that require prolonged physical effort.
  • Communicating effectively while wearing protective gear in high-noise environments.
