Salary Range: $41,786 Annually

Position Summary

This role involves telecommunications responsibilities in overseeing City service radios, managing incoming calls, and coordinating emergency response services, personnel, and equipment. The position requires proficiency in operating radios, telephones, alarm systems, computer terminals, and recording devices. Emergency and non-emergency calls are received continuously from the public, necessitating the dispatch of personnel and resources based on the specifics of each situation. Additionally, the officer monitors radio communications for the status of City personnel and maintains records for all calls received. Work performance is evaluated through ongoing oversight and review of documentation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Responds to emergency and non-emergency inquiries; gathers essential information; directs callers to the appropriate departments or agencies for assistance.
  • Utilizes a two-way radio system to support field officers; monitors alarm systems; dispatches personnel to address incidents or service requests; communicates information to officers and supervisors; receives updates from mobile units.
  • Tracks radio communications from local and state law enforcement; identifies relevant information for the City; notifies appropriate personnel.
  • Maintains and organizes all relevant logs, information cards, recordings, and other documentation on a daily basis.
  • Operates GCIC/NCIC systems; inputs and retrieves data on stolen vehicles, articles, firearms, wanted and missing individuals, as well as driving and criminal records.
  • Manages in-house computer systems to document incoming incident reports, accident reports, and traffic citations; processes and archives reports and citations in accordance with established procedures.
  • Handles financial transactions for fines, bonds, and parking violations; issues receipts and ensures accurate accounting and deposits.
  • Assists the Clerk of Court by preparing court calendars and processing legal documents; conducts criminal history checks for cases; organizes case files per court schedules; communicates case outcomes to relevant state agencies.
  • Performs general administrative tasks including filing, copying, typing, and distributing reports and correspondence.
  • Undertakes additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Education and Experience: High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
    • Basic understanding of public safety regulations, terminology, and operational methods.
    • Familiarity with police, fire, and emergency medical dispatch protocols.
    • Ability to learn telephone and radio operation standards and techniques.
    • Knowledge of the City’s street system and significant locations.
    • Clear and articulate verbal communication skills, particularly over the phone and radio.
    • Capacity to make prompt and effective decisions, especially in crisis situations.
    • Ability to interact courteously and professionally with colleagues and the public.
    • Proficient typing skills and ability to produce legible handwritten documents.
    • Basic mathematical skills.

Additional Requirements

  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years old.
  • Must achieve certification as a terminal operator within six (6) months of employment.
  • Must obtain P.O.S.T. certification as a Communications Officer within twelve (12) months of employment.
  • Availability for rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as well as emergency staffing needs.
  • Successful completion of a background check, pre-employment stress assessment, physical examination, and drug screening.
