Position Title: E911 Communications Officer

Reports To: Communications Supervisor

Department: Police Department (E-911)

Salary Range: $41,786 Annually

Job Summary

The E911 Communications Officer is responsible for essential telecommunications tasks, including monitoring City service radios, responding to incoming calls, and coordinating emergency services, personnel, and equipment. This role requires proficiency in operating radios, telephones, alarm systems, computer terminals, and recording devices. The officer will handle police, fire, emergency service, and animal control calls 24/7, dispatching resources based on the urgency and nature of each situation. Additionally, the officer will maintain communication with City employees and manage records for all calls received.

Key Responsibilities

  • Respond to emergency and non-emergency calls, gathering critical information and directing callers to the appropriate departments or agencies.
  • Utilize a two-way radio system to support field officers, monitor alarm systems, and dispatch personnel to various incidents.
  • Track radio communications from local and state police, relaying pertinent information to the necessary personnel.
  • Maintain and organize logs, information cards, recordings, and other essential documents on a daily basis.
  • Operate GCIC/NCIC computer systems to input and retrieve information regarding stolen items, wanted persons, and criminal histories.
  • Process incoming incident reports, accident reports, and traffic citations using the in-house computer system.
  • Handle financial transactions related to fines, bonds, and parking tickets, ensuring accurate record-keeping.
  • Assist the Clerk of Court with administrative tasks, including typing court calendars and processing legal documents.
  • Perform general office duties such as filing, copying, and distributing reports and correspondence.
  • Carry out additional tasks as assigned to support departmental operations.

Qualifications

  • Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
    • Basic understanding of public safety protocols and terminology.
    • Familiarity with police, fire, and ambulance dispatch procedures.
    • Ability to learn telephone and radio operating standards.
    • Knowledge of the City’s street system and key locations.
    • Clear and effective communication skills, particularly in high-pressure situations.
    • Strong decision-making abilities and the capacity to remain calm during emergencies.
    • Proficient typing skills and the ability to produce legible written material.
    • Basic mathematical skills for handling financial transactions.

Additional Requirements

  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years old.
  • Certification as a terminal operator must be obtained within six (6) months of employment.
  • P.O.S.T. certification as a Communications Officer is required within twelve (12) months of employment.
  • Availability for rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Successful completion of a background check, pre-employment stress test, physical examination, and drug screening.
