Atlanta Public Schools is seeking a dedicated Educational Support Specialist to assist educators in addressing the academic, behavioral, and social-emotional requirements of students within the classroom and broader community.

The Educational Support Specialist will provide essential support to certified educators through direct instruction, organizational assistance, and management techniques.

This role is supervised by the School Principal and requires physical presence within the school environment.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

CERTIFICATION:
Current GA Paraprofessional Certificate; OR High School Diploma or equivalent GED AND successful completion of GA paraprofessional assessment; OR Associate's degree or completion of two years of study at an accredited institution of higher education.

EDUCATION:
High School Diploma or equivalent GED is mandatory.

WORK EXPERIENCE:
Experience obtained through educational and certification/license requirements. A minimum of two years of experience working with children is preferred. Must be available for in-person instruction within the school setting with students present.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:
Basic understanding of child development principles. Ability to select and apply appropriate training/instructional methods and procedures for various learning situations. Proven capability to effectively supervise children. General knowledge of academic subjects relevant to the assigned position. Proficiency in computer use and ability to thrive in an in-person educational environment. Demonstrated communication skills and ability to follow instructions. Proven ability to collaborate effectively with students, staff, and parents in a professional manner.

Flexibility and adaptability to various in-person learning environments are essential. Understanding of school safety and security protocols.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to perform under pressure and meet deadlines.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Assists educators with in-person instruction, classroom organization, management, and instructional strategies. Attends classroom sessions to redirect students who are off-task and supports those requiring additional help.

Works with small groups or individual students in-person to reinforce skills, read, and ensure each student benefits from assigned tasks.

Aids teachers in monitoring students who have not engaged with classroom resources or completed assignments. Proactively communicates with educators regarding student issues and parent interactions. Responds promptly to communications from school leaders and teachers. Assists during standardized testing to uphold state and local regulations. Aids in preparing daily lesson materials and making copies for students (both print and electronic). Assists with the distribution of food, supplies, materials, and equipment, including technology. Supports educators in grading assignments and providing constructive feedback to students. While in a school-based learning environment, monitors student movement throughout the building to various classrooms, learning areas, and the cafeteria.

Assists students with classroom and cafeteria clean-up and ensures surfaces are sanitized to maintain health standards.

Supports administrators and staff in the safe and orderly transition of students between locations.

Aids in training volunteers in-person. Engages in professional development opportunities in-person. Required to maintain regular attendance and be available to work on-site during standard business hours. Performs additional duties as assigned by an appropriate administrator or their representative.

Vision:
Ability to read small print and view a computer screen for extended periods.

Hearing:
Ability to tolerate exposure to noisy environments.

Speech:
Ability to communicate clearly in face-to-face interactions and to speak with sufficient proficiency and volume to be understood over the phone or computer.

Upper Body Mobility:
Ability to use hands for grasping and manipulating small objects; twist and bend at the wrist and elbow; extend arms to reach outward and upward; lift objects; turn, raise, and lower the head.

Strength:

Ability to lift, push, pull, and/or carry objects weighing five or more pounds frequently. The incumbent may be required to physically manage conflicts as necessary.



Environmental Requirements:
Ability to handle constant work interruptions; work collaboratively with others; work independently; work indoors.

Mental Requirements:

Ability to read, write, understand, interpret, and apply information at a moderately complex level essential for successful job performance; math skills at a high school proficiency level; judgment and quick information processing; ability to learn quickly and follow verbal instructions; prioritize tasks; compile and coordinate information and records.

Understanding of stress management techniques.
