Job Overview

Responsible for the welfare and management of animals that are abandoned, injured, or at risk due to owner negligence. This role involves enforcing local animal regulations and ensuring ethical treatment of all animals.

Employees in this position are expected to make sound ethical choices daily, adhere to relevant laws and departmental policies, and maintain effective communication with the public and colleagues while upholding professionalism at all times.


Key Responsibilities

  • Collect, transport, and dispose of deceased animals.
  • Capture and care for stray animals, administering vaccinations and microchips as required.
  • Ensure cleanliness and upkeep of the Animal Shelter on a daily basis.
  • Collect fees related to animal impounds, releases, adoptions, or registrations.
  • Understand the health implications of euthanizing animals and be prepared to carry out this duty, including administering euthanasia solutions.
  • Operate a city vehicle safely under various weather conditions, ensuring proper maintenance and cleanliness.
  • Communicate effectively through radio, phone, and in-person interactions with citizens, colleagues, supervisors, and trainers, including individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Enforce city animal ordinances through proactive measures, capturing animals in violation of regulations and issuing citations as necessary.
  • Utilize the City CAD system for operational tasks.
  • Appear in court to provide testimony regarding animal ordinance violations.
  • Transport equipment and supplies as directed.
  • Prepare detailed written reports and document all calls and investigations.
  • Conduct follow-up investigations on code violations or animal cruelty cases as instructed.
  • Be available for on-call shifts and reside within a reasonable distance for emergency response.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Maintain physical fitness to perform all required tasks.
  • Ability to safely operate a city vehicle under various conditions.
  • Capability to walk long distances and pursue animals when necessary.
  • Ability to remain alert while seated or standing for extended periods, working independently without direct supervision during any shift, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Effective communication skills in English, both written and verbal, with a professional demeanor even in challenging situations.
  • Collaborative team player, capable of working effectively with others without discrimination.
  • Ability to lift and bend to handle weights of 50 lbs or more.
  • Proficient typing skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office suite.
  • Completion of Basic Animal Control Officer Course within the first six months of employment is required.
  • Vision correctable to 20/20, hearing within normal range, and full use of both hands are necessary.
  • Participation in required training, which may involve occasional overnight travel, and court appearances when summoned.
  • Knowledge of Petpoint data entry is preferred.
  • Willingness to undergo random drug screenings.
  • No allergies related to animals.

Education and Experience

Required:

  • Minimum age of 18 years.
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Valid Texas Driver's License without restrictions (except A) at the time of appointment.

Preferred:

  • Two years of experience in animal handling.
  • Advanced ACO Certification.
  • Euthanasia certification.
  • Proficiency in Spanish is a plus.
