The Tree Improvement Program is seeking a dedicated Seed Orchard Manager to oversee the operations of a Northern Red Oak Seed Orchard. This role involves the stewardship of the orchard's trees and facilities, as well as the organization and execution of acorn surveys and collections. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in creating a genetically diverse acorn blend for reforestation efforts in southern National Forests and will coordinate orchard activities with various stakeholders.



Key Responsibilities:
  • Manage the upkeep of the orchard, including mowing, dead branch removal, and tree health assessments.
  • Supervise and assist in the collection of pedigreed acorns, ensuring proper handling and preparation for transfer.
  • Conduct orchard-wide surveys to assess acorn presence and quantity.
  • Collaborate with U.S. Forest Service teams to enhance forest management practices.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Proficient understanding of oak seed orchard management and acorn processing techniques.
  • Experience in collaborating with federal and state agencies and leading a team.
  • Competency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Aptitude for collecting and accurately recording scientific data.
  • Ability to work in varying weather conditions and lift heavy objects.
  • Willingness to work occasional weekends and travel as needed.
  • Preferred candidates will have knowledge of hardwood tree improvement and experience operating machinery.

Educational Requirements: A bachelor's degree in forestry or wildlife management, coupled with a minimum of one year of relevant experience in acorn collection and processing. Experience in large-scale acorn collection is highly desirable.
