Research Scientist

We are seeking a highly skilled Research Scientist to join our team at the Southwest Research Institute. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting probabilistic seismic hazard assessments for critical facilities, evaluating technical information regarding seismic sources, and collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to integrate probabilistic seismic hazard findings into engineering and risk assessment.
Key Responsibilities- Develop seismic source and ground motion models and assess the uncertainties associated with these models.
- Stay abreast of the latest developments in seismology, earthquake engineering, and hazard analysis, and incorporate new methodologies into project work.
- Prepare comprehensive reports and presentations for both technical and non-technical audiences, conveying complex concepts in an accessible manner.
- Provide expert consultation to clients, regulatory authorities, and internal teams on seismic hazard assessments.
- Participate in business development efforts.
- Requires a PhD in Seismology, Geophysics, or related field.
- 0 *** Proven experience in probabilistic seismic hazard analysis, with a focus on seismic source models, including active faults and earthquake records.
- Proficiency in software tools such as OpenQuake, SeisRiskIII, and other industry-standard applications.
- Familiarity with programming languages such as Python, MATLAB, or similar. A track record of publications and contributions to the advancement of seismological research is highly desirable.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information to diverse audiences.
- Open and willing to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams and managing projects independently.
- Due to the nature of the contract, candidates must have US Citizenship or have held US Permanent Residency (non-U.S. citizen national, lawful permanent resident, asylee, or refugee) for at least 5 years.
- A valid/clear drivers license is required.
