Responsibilities

As a Physical Scientist at the U.S. Department of the Interior, your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Leading the planning, coordination, and execution of studies related to coastal change hazards.
  • Managing competing priorities and ensuring timely completion of tasks.
  • Utilizing technical expertise and organizational skills to successfully complete projects.
  • Compiling, analyzing, and manipulating data through GIS and remote sensing technologies.
  • Drafting and reviewing reports to document progress and findings of studies.
Physical Requirements
The role involves some physical exertion, which may include prolonged standing in laboratory settings. Fieldwork entails outdoor activities that require significant walking and climbing over rugged terrain. Physical demands may also involve lifting heavy objects exceeding 50 pounds, navigating restrictive spaces, and ensuring personal safety in various environments.

Work Environment
The work is primarily conducted in field, laboratory, or office settings with adequate lighting.

Special Requirements for This Position:

Qualifications

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet one of the following criteria:

A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited institution leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics, including 24 semester hours in physical science or related fields.

**OR

B. A combination of education and experience equivalent to the above, including at least 24 semester hours in physical science or related fields, totaling 4 years of education and experience.

GS-12 Level: In addition to the basic education requirement, applicants must have one year of professional experience equivalent to the GS-11 level, demonstrating the ability to conduct complex physical science studies.

  • Experience includes both paid and unpaid work, including volunteer activities through National Service programs and other organizations.
