Position Overview

The U.S. Department of the Interior is seeking a qualified individual for the role of Physical Scientist at the Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center. This position is open to all eligible U.S. citizens.

Key Responsibilities

As a Physical Scientist, your primary responsibilities will encompass:

  • Leading the strategic planning, coordination, and execution of studies focused on coastal change hazards.
  • Effectively managing competing priorities to ensure timely completion of assigned tasks.
  • Utilizing technical expertise and organizational skills to successfully execute projects.
  • Compiling, analyzing, and manipulating data through the use of GIS and remote sensing technologies.
  • Drafting and reviewing comprehensive reports to document the progress and findings of studies.
Physical Requirements
This role necessitates a degree of physical exertion, including potential prolonged standing in laboratory settings. Fieldwork will involve outdoor activities, which may require considerable walking and climbing over uneven terrain. Candidates should be prepared for physical tasks such as lifting heavy objects exceeding 50 pounds and navigating restrictive spaces.

Work Environment

The position is primarily conducted in field, laboratory, or office environments, all of which are adequately illuminated.

Essential Requirements:

  • Applicants must be U.S. Citizens.
  • Must be deemed suitable for Federal employment based on a background investigation.
  • The selected candidate may be required to serve a one-year probationary period.

  • Successful completion of a pre-employment medical examination is mandatory due to the physical demands of this role.

Qualifications

Basic Education Requirement: To qualify for the Physical Scientist position, applicants must meet one of the following criteria:

A. Completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited institution leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics, including 24 semester hours in physical science or related engineering disciplines.

**OR**

B. A combination of education and experience equivalent to the requirements outlined in A, totaling four years of education and/or experience in physical science or related fields.

GS-12 Level Requirements: In addition to the basic education requirement, candidates must possess one year of relevant professional experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in Federal service, demonstrating the ability to independently conduct complex physical science studies.
