Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Orientation and Mobility Specialist to join our team at The School District Of Philadelphia. As a key member of our special education team, you will provide itinerant orientation and mobility services to visually impaired students, assessing their needs and developing individualized plans to improve their mobility and independent functioning.

Key Responsibilities
  • Participate in the diagnostic and Individualized Education Program (IEP) process for students suspected of being visually impaired, evaluating their orientation and mobility skills.
  • Provide training and direct instruction in orientation and mobility techniques, including visual efficiency skills, residual vision utilization, and spatial orientation.
  • Collaborate with teachers and other school staff to develop and implement IEPs related to orientation and mobility services.
  • Design and implement orientation and mobility instruction based on student assessments and observations.
  • Monitor student progress, adjust goals as needed, and maintain records of evaluations and progress.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Two years of full-time, paid, professional experience as a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist working in schools with school-age students.
  • Possession of a valid Orientation and Mobility Specialist certificate issued by the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals (ACVREP) or a valid National Orientation Mobility certificate (NOMC) issued by the National Blindness Professional Certification Board.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated knowledge of federal, state, and local mandates governing special education programs, laws and regulations affecting orientation and mobility services, and principles and techniques used in providing orientation and mobility services.
  • Effective behavior management skills and training techniques, as well as knowledge of assistive technology and adaptive devices.
