Maintenance Mechanic Job Description

Summary:

The Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for performing general maintenance and repair tasks as assigned by the Maintenance Supervisor, Supervisory General Engineer, or Chief, Engineering Service, for the Columbus Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The incumbent also serves as the facilities locksmith and is responsible for keys, locks, door hardware, and doors throughout the facility.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform all duties of a journeyman Locksmith and be assigned to the Maintenance Section of Engineering Service.
  • Conduct complex tasks involved in building, repairing, overhauling, modifying, adapting, testing, and installing a variety of locking and security devices typically found on doors, desks, compartments, mobile equipment, safes, and other secured locations.
  • Be responsible for the VA Central Ohio Healthcare System Locksmith Program, including data entry and updating key information into space files.
  • Train and develop Key Control Programs for all Key Control Representatives.
  • Conduct training on the Key Control System and required Computerized System Records.
  • Understand the provisions of the National Electrical Code and be sufficiently knowledgeable of the code to satisfactorily research special requirements or applications pertaining to low voltage systems.
  • Identify electrical problems and define the repairs/upgrades required to ensure safe working and living environments throughout the facility.
  • Define repairs/upgrades and define required materials (bill of materials), tools, and equipment requirements, and work assignments of subordinate maintenance workers through project completion.
  • Measure, cut, and construct using standard building materials.
  • Independently plan and complete projects that involve constructing, altering, repairing, and/or modifying framework, rafters, doors, finished paneling, windows, rough furniture, interior/exterior trim, staircases, trusses, and beams.
  • Measure, cut, construct, install, repair, and modify routine mill work, framing, benches, partitions, tables, furniture, etc.
  • Perform work to close tolerances, exact fit, and structural soundness.
Requirements:
  • Experience in maintenance and repair, preferably in a healthcare setting.
  • Knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems, including low voltage systems.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to lift and carry tools, equipment, ladders, scaffolding, parts, and supplies up to 50 pounds.
  • Occasional requirement to lift and carry items over 50 pounds.
Working Conditions:
  • Exposed to a full array of weather conditions.
  • Subject to danger of falling when working from ladders or hydraulic lifts.
  • Exposed to dust/dirt while mixing mortar and handling materials.
  • Work is performed in all areas of the hospital environment, inside and outside.
  • Work is often dirty, dusty, and greasy.
