Job Summary

This position is located at the Shiprock Service Unit, Dzilth-na-o-dith-hle Health Center (DZHC), Clinical Services Branch, Diagnostic Imaging Section, Bloomfield, NM.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform a wide variety of radiological examinations per request by the medical staff for use in clinical diagnosis.
  • Receive patients, explain methods of procedure, position patients, and make exposures necessary for the requested examination.
  • Schedule patients for examination and monitor all radiographs taken in the department to assure high quality.
  • Develop and maintain a quality control system for the digital film on a daily basis.
  • Maintain records of all functions, including preventive maintenance of equipment, any repairs of equipment, radiation surveys, etc.
  • Responsible for updating and maintaining the Radiology Policies and Procedures Manual.
  • Perform other duties assigned.
Requirements
  • Selectee may be subject to a probationary/trial period.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, social).

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part-time experience.

You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

Public Law 97-35 requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75.

Essentially, they must (1) have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation, and is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education, and (2) be certified as radiographers in their field.

The following meet these requirements:

  • Persons employed by the Federal Government as radiologic personnel prior to the effective date of the regulation (January 13, 1986) who show evidence of current or fully satisfactory performance or certification of such from a licensed practitioner such as a doctor of medicine, osteopathy, dentistry, podiatry, or chiropractic who prescribes radiologic procedures to others.
  • Persons first employed by the Federal Government as radiologic personnel after the effective date of the regulation who (a) received training from institutions in a State or foreign jurisdiction that did not accredit training in that particular field at the time of graduation, or (b) practiced in a State or foreign jurisdiction that did not license that particular field or did not allow special eligibility to take a licensure examination for those who did not graduate from an accredited educational program, provided that such persons show evidence of training, experience, and competence as determined by OPM or the employing agency.

For positions at GS-4 and above: Experience in the operation of diagnostic radiology equipment under the direction of radiologists or other medical officers to produce radiographic studies used in medical diagnosis and treatment.

OR Education and Training:

Qualifying educational programs for radiography and radiation therapy technology are available in accredited colleges, universities, hospitals, medical schools, or postsecondary technical or vocational schools.

Education or training from programs based in hospitals must have been from those hospitals that were accredited at the time of the education or training by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals or by the American Osteopathic Association.

In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below.

Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks:

  • Experience performing a variety of technical procedures requiring judgment and initiative in the application of ionizing radiation.
  • Experience positioning patients for radiographic examinations.
  • Experience determining radiographic exposure techniques to use for specific imaging.
  • Independently performs and optimizes technical factors according to equipment specifications to meet the ALARA principle.

Receives patients, explains methods of procedure, and positions patients.

Confers with radiologists to establish requirements of nonstandard examinations and determines technical factors.

Advises radiologist or physician of results of examination and provides a preliminary diagnostic evaluation.

Verifies that exposure indicator data for digital radiographic systems has not been altered or modified and is included in the Digital Imaging Communications in Medicine (DICOM) header and on images exported to media.

Analyzes images to determine the use of appropriate imaging parameters.

Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level.

Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
