Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in surgical procedures, assess incoming animals for health issues, and evaluate animals for adoption, fostering, rescue, or humane euthanasia.
  • Administer vaccinations, conduct heartworm, FIV, and FeLEUK testing, and perform necessary euthanasia for non-adoptable animals.
  • Carry out routine laboratory tasks such as fecal examinations and skin scrapings.
  • Maintain accurate records of controlled substances and assist in the adoption process with potential pet owners.
  • Prepare animals for surgery, set up surgical areas, assist veterinarians during operations, and monitor animal health before and after procedures.
  • Administer medications, vaccinations, and various types of injections as required.
  • Ensure compliance with federal regulations regarding the security and management of drugs and controlled substances.
  • Conduct pre-surgical evaluations, report medical histories, and manage blood work results.
  • Examine and vaccinate impounded animals, assess their adoptability, and monitor the kennel population for health issues.
  • Collect blood samples for clinic blood banks and perform assigned laboratory duties.
  • Undertake additional tasks as needed to support the team.

Qualifications:

  • Valid Florida Veterinary Medical Technician Certification or equivalent certification recognized by the Florida Veterinary Medical Association (FVMA) or the Florida Veterinary Technician Association (FVTA).
  • Candidates with Veterinary Medical Technician Certification from other states or graduates from AVMA accredited programs may be considered, provided they obtain Florida certification within six months.
  • Must complete pre-exposure rabies vaccinations and euthanasia certification within six months of employment.
  • A valid State of Florida Driver's License is required, subject to evaluation of driving history.
  • Flexibility to work various schedules, including emergency and disaster response situations.
  • Physical capability to lift heavy animals and equipment.
  • Willingness to face potential risks associated with handling animals that may be hostile or diseased.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in animal handling.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and Outlook.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Knowledge of veterinary medical and surgical practices.
  • Proficient in applying medical and surgical techniques.
  • Ability to follow both oral and written instructions accurately.
  • Competence in handling and restraining animals of all sizes.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to foster effective working relationships with colleagues and the public.
  • Ability to operate office equipment and manage information efficiently.
