Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in surgical procedures, assess incoming animals for health issues, and evaluate animals for adoption, fostering, rescue placement, or euthanasia.
- Administer euthanasia for non-adoptable animals, provide vaccinations, and conduct tests for heartworms, FIV, and FeLEUK.
- Perform routine laboratory tasks such as fecal examinations and skin scrapings.
- Maintain accurate records and manage controlled substances.
- Support the adoption process by interacting with potential adopters.
- Prepare animals for surgery, set up the operating room with necessary surgical instruments, assist veterinarians during procedures, and monitor animal health before and after surgery.
- Administer medications, vaccinations, anesthesia, and various types of injections.
- Ensure compliance with federal regulations regarding the security and management of drugs and controlled substances.
- Conduct pre-surgical physical examinations and evaluations, reporting known medical histories and vaccination statuses.
- Assess and vaccinate impounded animals, determine their adoptability, and inspect the kennel population daily for signs of injury or illness.
- Collect blood samples for clinic blood banks and carry out assigned laboratory tasks.
- Perform additional related duties as required.
Required Qualifications:
- Valid Florida Veterinary Medical Technician Certification (certifications from the Florida Veterinary Medical Association or the Florida Veterinary Technician Association are equally accepted).
- Candidates with Veterinary Medical Technician Certification from other states or graduates of AVMA-accredited programs may be considered but must obtain Florida certification within six months.
- Must complete pre-exposure rabies vaccinations and euthanasia certification within six months of employment.
- Valid State of Florida Driver's License required upon hire, contingent on a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record evaluation.
- Willingness to work various schedules, including mandatory shifts during emergencies or special situations.
- Physical capability to lift heavy animals, equipment, and supplies.
- Potential exposure to risks when handling hostile or diseased animals.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous experience in animal handling.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Understanding of veterinary medical and surgical practices, procedures, and laboratory techniques.
- Skill in executing medical and surgical procedures.
- Ability to comprehend and follow both oral and written instructions.
- Capability to handle and restrain animals of all sizes.
- Proficiency in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with colleagues and the public.
- Ability to interact with the public in a courteous and tactful manner.
- Competence in operating a personal computer and office equipment to manage information and generate reports efficiently.
