Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist veterinarians during surgical procedures and evaluate incoming animals for health issues.
  • Administer vaccinations, perform diagnostic tests, and manage the euthanasia process for non-adoptable animals.
  • Conduct routine laboratory work, including fecal examinations and skin scrapes.
  • Maintain accurate records of controlled substances and assist in the adoption process.
  • Prepare animals for surgery, ensuring the operating room is equipped and ready.
  • Provide medications and vaccinations through various methods of administration.
  • Ensure compliance with federal regulations regarding drug security and handling.
  • Perform physical examinations and evaluations of animals prior to surgery.
  • Assess the health of impounded animals and determine their adoptability.
  • Collect blood samples for testing and perform laboratory tasks as assigned.
  • Carry out additional duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • Must hold a valid Florida Veterinary Medical Technician Certification or equivalent.
  • Candidates with certification from other states must obtain Florida certification within six months of employment.
  • Pre-exposure rabies vaccinations and euthanasia certification are required within six months of hire.
  • A valid Florida Driver's License is necessary, with eligibility based on a Motor Vehicle Record evaluation.
  • Flexibility to work various schedules, including emergency situations.
  • Physical capability to lift heavy animals and equipment.
  • Willingness to work with potentially hostile or diseased animals.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in animal handling is highly desirable.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications such as Excel, Word, and Outlook.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of veterinary medical and surgical practices.
  • Ability to apply medical procedures effectively.
  • Capacity to follow detailed instructions and maintain effective communication.
  • Competence in handling animals of various sizes.
  • Ability to foster positive relationships with colleagues and the public.
  • Proficient in using office equipment and software for record-keeping and reporting.
