Position Overview

The Office of Central Advising is seeking applications for two full-time Academic Advisor roles. Reporting to the Director of Central Advising, these positions are dedicated to delivering tailored and comprehensive academic guidance and support to designated student groups with minimal oversight. The Academic Advisor plays a vital role in campus-wide advising and retention efforts, employing extensive institutional knowledge and relevant student development theories to navigate complex situations, enhance student learning, and ensure consistent application of University policies and procedures.

Key Responsibilities:

Academic Advising (80%)
  • Deliver customized academic advising to students, assisting with course selection, degree requirements, academic planning, registration, and schedule modifications.
  • Provide insights on academic policies, procedures, and resources to foster student success, interpreting University policies and curriculum for students, faculty, and staff.
  • Guide students through academic challenges in both individual and group settings, offering strategies for improvement and making appropriate referrals to support services as needed.
  • Monitor and assess student academic progress, providing proactive support and interventions, particularly for at-risk students.
  • Advise students on major selection, career aspirations, and co-curricular activities to enrich their educational journey.
  • Create and distribute academic resources and materials for students, including term-by-term academic schedules, study aids, planning tools, and informational brochures.
  • Prepare and conduct presentations and workshops focused on academic advising, study skills, and career planning.
  • Exhibit cultural competency and inclusivity in all interactions with students, colleagues, and stakeholders, engaging in self-reflection and training to challenge personal biases and promote a sense of belonging.
  • Contribute to the formulation and execution of advising policies, procedures, and best practices, setting goals and objectives for the enhancement of the advising unit in collaboration with the direct supervisor.
  • Effectively utilize advising technologies and tools to support student advising and academic planning, instructing students on the use of advising-related software and tools.
  • Solicit and integrate feedback from students, colleagues, and supervisors to continuously refine advising practices and services.
  • Represent the academic unit or advising department through participation on University committees and leadership roles.
  • Provide mentorship and training to new advising staff, fostering a collaborative and supportive team environment.
Enrollment and Retention Support (20%)
  • Verify, certify, process, and/or complete relevant student-related forms and procedures, such as degree audits, transcripts, graduation memorandums, registration adjustment requests, and satisfactory academic progress plans.
  • Review academic records, placement tests, and other standardized test results with students to ensure appropriate course placement, administering overrides when necessary.
  • Maintain accurate and current student records in compliance with State/Federal law and University regulations, ensuring data security.
  • Engage in orientation programs, advising events, and recruitment activities to support incoming and prospective students.
  • Establish effective communication channels with students, faculty, and staff to facilitate information sharing and support, ensuring students receive timely information on educational options and University policies.
  • Collaborate with academic departments, career services, counseling centers, and other campus partners to provide comprehensive support to students and develop connections with departments and faculty.
  • Stay informed about trends, best practices, and developments in academic advising and higher education, participating in professional development opportunities, training sessions, and conferences.
  • Work collaboratively with other departments and/or colleges and the Director of Central Advising to ensure a coordinated approach to advising and retention.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, Liberal Arts, Interdisciplinary Studies, or a related academic field and 1 year of experience in an academic environment or counseling role.
  • Master's degree and experience working with diverse undergraduate and graduate students in an academic or career advising office in a higher education setting is preferred.
