POSITION SUMMARY:

The Outpatient Coding Specialist is responsible for the meticulous review, analysis, and assignment of medical codes in accordance with established coding standards and criteria. This role focuses on outpatient medical record documentation, encompassing a variety of elements including:

- Medical, diagnostic, and procedural information
- Accurate coding for ICD-10-CM and/or CPT-4 HCPCS codes

The primary coding responsibilities include Diagnostic/Clinical, Emergency Room, Recurring, and Specimen patient types.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Conduct thorough reviews of medical records to ensure proper coding
- Assign appropriate codes based on clinical documentation
- Maintain compliance with coding guidelines and regulations

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

High school diploma or equivalent is mandatory.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

No prior experience is necessary.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION:

No specific licensure or certification is mandated by law.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

One or more certifications are required, such as RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CCA, CCS-P, CPC, CPC-A, or CPC-H. Prior coding experience is preferred. Completion of a coding certificate program accredited by AHIMA is advantageous. Experience in coding within a multi-facility organization and remote coding experience is considered a plus.
