Position Overview

This role is designated for remote work. The Medical Coding Specialist is responsible for inpatient coding, where they will extract clinical data from various medical records, charts, and documentation. The specialist will assign the correct ICD-10-CM/PCS and CPT codes to patient records in accordance with established protocols. This position requires proficiency in coding databases and verification of DRG assignments. The role relies on established guidelines and some prior experience to execute job functions under general supervision.

Qualifications

Experience:

Possession of RHIT/RHIA credentials along with 5 years of experience in acute care coding, or RHIT/RHIA with 3 years of acute care coding experience, or a total of 7 years in acute care coding; CCS certification can substitute for 1 year of acute care coding experience.

Education:

High School diploma or equivalent.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coding and Abstracting: Ensure accurate coding and assist the Business Office and external agencies with coding clarifications related to reimbursement matters.
  • Quality Assurance: Collaborate with other departments within Health Information Management (HIM) to guarantee that all necessary components are present for precise coding and the highest quality of patient medical records.
  • Performance Metrics: Maintain an accuracy rate of at least 95% based on internal and/or external evaluations, while meeting productivity standards for an 8-hour workday. Engage in problem identification and resolution, and assist in data collection and chart audits as needed.
  • Customer Service: Demonstrate professionalism in interactions with patients and colleagues, ensuring to meet the needs of customers of all ages.
  • Continuous Improvement: Participate in meetings and educational programs, contributing actively to discussions and sharing expertise to enhance the quality of training for new staff and interns.
  • DRG Coding and APC Assignment: Accurately determine the sequencing of diseases, diagnoses, and surgical procedures, assigning appropriate codes to patient records using ICD-9-CM and CPT-4 guidelines.
  • Additional Duties: Perform other responsibilities as assigned.
