Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Director of Strategic Communications to join our team at Stanford University. As a key member of our communications team, you will be responsible for developing and executing a range of communications related to institutional issues and initiatives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Proactively identify issues important to higher education and to the university, and develop communications strategies to address them.
  • Coordinate with subject-matter experts and organizational leaders to develop and implement communications plans.
  • Write, edit, and produce written, oral, and digital communications, including statements, talking points, institutional messages, news stories, social media posts, web copy, correspondence, video scripts, and strategy memos.
  • Coordinate with colleagues who interact with the news media and who manage the university's digital media channels.
  • Draft, maintain, and circulate issue briefs and talking points.
  • Provide strategic counsel to organizational leaders, campus communicators, and other colleagues on issues that relate to the university's reputation.
  • Maintain ongoing awareness of the major issues being managed by the university and familiarity with the university's responses to them.
  • Participate in crisis response.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree and eight years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Exceptional writing and editing ability, including the ability to analyze and synthesize complex material and communicate it in a clear and compelling manner.
  • Strong strategic and tactical thinking ability.
  • Experience developing proactive and reactive communications tailored both to the needs of diverse audiences and to the requirements of multiple communications channels.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage diverse and competing interests.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others, balance varying perspectives and input, and incorporate feedback on draft communications in an effective manner.
  • Experience working with and advising leaders of a complex organization on communications strategy and execution.
  • Experience managing institutional issues in time-sensitive situations.
  • Understanding of the news media and familiarity with the processes of coordinating with media relations colleagues in managing institutional issues.
  • Strong personal organizational skills needed to track and manage numerous work projects.
  • Excellent influencing, negotiating, and relationship management skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion on sensitive issues.
