About the Position:

Job Summary:

The City of Roanoke, Virginia is seeking a highly skilled Maintenance Technician II to join our Transportation division in the Department of Public Works. This role involves performing skilled work in the maintenance of rights-of-way and operating commercial mowing equipment, as well as supervising a 3-person crew.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Makes repairs and renovations to city right-of-ways and corridors, including mowing, mulching, aeration, grading, seeding, and sodding.
  • Services and makes minor repairs and adjustments on equipment.
  • Operates heavy and light equipment in snow removal and assists with special events and other emergency tasks, including some nights and weekends, as needed.
  • Maintains accurate log sheets, checklists, and pre-trip sheets.
  • Certifications for Registered Technician Pesticide Applicator and Class B CDL with Tanker endorsement are required within 3 months of hire.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and two to three years related experience and/or training in trades area assigned; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

Working Conditions:

  • Regularly exposed to outside weather conditions.
  • Frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and vibration.
  • Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and fumes or airborne particles.
  • Noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

May supervise crew in the absence of Maintenance Technician III or Maintenance Technician IV.
