Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Transportation Equipment Operator to join our team at the West Virginia Department of Transportation. As a key member of our highway maintenance team, you will be responsible for operating and maintaining a variety of equipment, including motorized highway maintenance equipment, to ensure the safe and efficient movement of traffic.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate and maintain a range of equipment, including skid steer, utility tractor, aerial bucket truck, front-end loader, tandem-axle truck, and snowplow.
  • Perform major repairs to highways, culverts, and bridge structures.
  • Make minor mechanical repairs in the field, including changing tires, blades, or filters.
  • Responsible for equipment maintenance, including cleaning and lubricating equipment and checking fluid levels.
  • Flagging, erecting traffic control signs and barricades on construction and maintenance projects.
  • Shoveling materials, cleaning culverts, mowing, and brush cutting.
Requirements
  • A valid class A or class B Commercial Driver's License is required.
  • Ability to read operating manuals and specifications.
  • Ability to safely operate basic hand and power tools.
  • Ability to climb high steel structures.
  • Ability to operate and maintain highway equipment and attachments.
  • Ability to diagnose less complex mechanical problems and follow appropriate procedures for repair.
  • Ability to maintain routine records (timecards, work repair orders).
  • Ability to use hand tools and operate motorized equipment.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to train and work cooperatively with other skilled and semi-skilled workers.

Additional Information

The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. Progression through the apprenticeship program is dependent upon hours completed, proficiency in work, training completed, as well as maintaining and/or obtaining a class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
