Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Transportation Worker 1 Mechanic to join our team at the West Virginia Department of Transportation. As a key member of our District Equipment Shop, you will perform entry-level repairs and preventative maintenance on transportation vehicles and heavy equipment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform minor maintenance on fleet equipment and vehicles, including tire changes, fluid checks, and windshield wiper installations.
  • Inspect vehicles for compliance with state regulations and ensure a safe work environment by keeping the garage area clean.
  • Assist higher-level mechanics with vehicle and heavy equipment repairs, including diesel-powered equipment.
  • Travel may be required, and a valid driver's license is necessary.
  • Obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six months of employment.
Requirements
  • Knowledge of general safety procedures and methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in vehicle maintenance and repair.
  • Ability to diagnose minor mechanical problems and determine appropriate procedures for repair.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, as well as learn from example and work cooperatively with others.
  • Ability to maintain routine records, including timecards and repair work orders.
