We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Structure and Bridge Maintenance Specialist to join our team at the Virginia Department of Transportation. As a key member of our crew, you will be responsible for performing manual labor tasks, constructing, repairing, and maintaining timber, steel, and concrete bridge elements, and other structures.
Key Responsibilities- Participate as a working member of the crew, performing manual labor tasks to complete projects and accomplish objectives in a safe and efficient manner.
- Construct, repair, and maintain timber, steel, and concrete bridge elements and other structures.
- Apply appropriate in-stream and environmental protection measures during all structural maintenance and construction activities.
- Prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal or other types of emergency operations. Provide traffic control.
- Operate light and medium-duty highway equipment to perform maintenance and construction-related work tasks.
- Perform a combination of skilled tasks to include carpentry, welding, and concrete finishing.
- Knowledge of highway and bridge maintenance methods, equipment, materials, and safety practices.
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
- Skill in the operation and use of light and medium-duty equipment, as well as in the use of hand and power tools.
- Safety shoes required.
- Ability to perform mathematical calculations to measure and lay out constructed elements on bridges and culverts.
- Skill in carpentry, concrete forming and finishing, and welding.
- Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.
- Ability to perform minor repairs and preventive maintenance on equipment and tools.
- Ability to work at heights, over and, or in water, in heavy traffic, and under other adverse conditions.
- Experience in carpentry, building forms and false works, and concrete placement and finishing.
- Experience in bridge maintenance or construction.
- Valid CDL with appropriate endorsements.
- Valid Certified Crane Operator with appropriate endorsements.
- Experience fabricating or welding steel components.
This position is designated as essential and, as such, all duties associated with the job are required during emergency situations which may include but are not limited to inclement weather, disaster response, and emergency operations. Performance of these duties may require work outside of normal business hours including nights, weekends, and holidays. VDOT will determine when essential positions are required to report.
