Job Overview

The Medication Administration Coordinator plays a vital role in ensuring the proper distribution of medications to residents as prescribed by the attending physician. This position operates under the guidance of the physician, nurse supervisor, or charge nurse, and adheres to the standards set forth by Midwest Health.

The administration of medications will be conducted in accordance with established nursing protocols, the policies and procedures of the organization, and the regulations of the state.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Adhere to the organization's personnel, safety, and corporate policies and procedures.
  • Follow the nursing department's established policies and procedures.
  • Immediately report any witnessed or reported allegations of resident abuse or neglect to the appropriate authorities.
  • Treat residents, family members, visitors, and colleagues with respect and dignity.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding all resident and family information.
  • Arrive at work punctually and as scheduled.
  • Document and report any complaints or grievances from residents to the appropriate nursing management.
  • Participate and cooperate with facility inspections conducted by authorized government agencies as requested.
  • Keep the medication cart and medication room clean and organized.
  • Ensure resident privacy is protected during medication administration.
  • Accurately prepare, administer, and document oral and/or topical medications as ordered by the attending physician.
  • Immediately document and report any errors in medication administration upon discovery.
  • Ensure all administered medications are properly labeled and stored according to facility policy.
  • Complete medication charting in compliance with facility procedures.
  • Assist in the proper disposal of medications as per facility guidelines.
  • Help document and remove medications that have been discontinued by the attending physician.
  • Follow procedures for handling drug receipt errors, including notifying the delivery source and nursing management.
  • Support residents in self-administering their medications as per facility policy.
  • Assist the Nurse Supervisor/Charge Nurse in monitoring self-administration processes.
  • Notify nursing staff when medication refills are necessary.
  • Familiarize oneself with common medical abbreviations, symbols, and terms relevant to medication administration.

Qualifications:
  • Regular attendance at the worksite is required.
  • A valid Medication Manager certification is mandatory.
  • Current CPR certification is required.
  • If driving is necessary for job duties, compliance with the organization's Motor Vehicles policy is essential.
  • Basic computer skills are required.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language is necessary.
  • Flexibility to work beyond standard hours, including weekends and holidays, may be required.
  • Capability to assist in the evacuation of residents during emergencies is essential.
  • Ability to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation is required.
  • Must meet general health requirements as per state regulations and organizational policy, which may include medical and physical evaluations.
  • Employees must use appropriate lifting techniques or seek assistance when lifting or carrying objects over 25 pounds.

During the routine performance of essential functions, various body movements may occur naturally.
