About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated and compassionate Peer Specialist to join our team at the Veterans Health Administration. As a Peer Specialist, you will play a vital role in supporting our veterans in their mental health recovery journey.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with veterans to develop and implement personalized wellness and recovery plans.
  • Provide ongoing individual and group meetings to teach veterans effective coping strategies and techniques for managing mental health conditions.
  • Assist veterans in building social skills and community reintegration through role-playing and social skills training.
  • Utilize recovery tools to coach veterans on relevant skills needed for self-management of their health condition(s) and pursuit of their personal wellness.
  • Observe behaviors that may indicate difficulty adapting or responding to treatment and provide support and guidance as needed.
  • Assist veterans in exploring their interests and options for making improvements in life functioning areas such as housing, employment, relationships, and community engagement.
  • Provide and advocate for effective wellness and holistic recovery-based services that aid in daily living.
  • Identify veterans' skills, strengths, supports, and resources needed to aid them in achieving their recovery goals.
Requirements
  • Must be a veteran who has recovered or is recovering from a mental health condition.
  • Must be certified by a not-for-profit entity engaged in peer specialist training or a State as having satisfied relevant State requirements for a peer specialist position.
  • Must have spent a minimum of 1 year in personal recovery from a mental health condition.
  • Must have at least 1 year of specialized experience at the next lower graded level, which involved post-personal mental health recovery experience as a mentor providing counseling to support peers in mental health and/or addiction recovery, a recovery advocate directly involved with consumers of mental health services, a psychiatric therapy aide, or equivalent work involving in-person communication to support others in mental health recovery.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in a related field such as psychology, social work, or counseling.
  • Experience working with veterans and their families.
  • Knowledge of mental health recovery principles and practices.
