QUALIFICATIONS FOR BUS MONITOR:

Any combination equivalent to a high school diploma or G.E.D. Certificate, or demonstrated progress toward obtaining a G.E.D. as mandated by Kentucky law; must be in good physical condition without lifting restrictions, as confirmed by a pre-employment physical examination.

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE:

To accompany a school bus and assist the driver in ensuring student discipline during transit; to operate mechanical lifts and other specialized assistance devices.

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Familiarity with the operation of mechanical lifts, wheelchairs, seat belts, restraining harnesses, wheelchair clamping devices, and other assistance tools; understanding of safe practices related to school bus transportation; awareness of the challenges faced by students with special needs; proficiency in basic record-keeping techniques; knowledge of relevant sections of Kentucky Administrative Regulations and other applicable laws; understanding of health and safety regulations; capability to assist the bus driver in maintaining discipline while ensuring student safety; ability to keep accurate records and documentation; skill in assisting students with boarding, alighting, and seating arrangements as necessary; capacity to relate to and understand children with special needs; ability to foster and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships; proficiency in both oral and written communication; ability to lift students according to established guidelines; knowledge of emergency evacuation procedures; adherence to health and safety regulations; and ability to maintain certification in First Aid and Adult/Child CPR.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Enforce order and discipline among students on the bus in accordance with District policies and procedures regarding student discipline and communication with school officials, parents, and the public; engage with parents regarding inquiries, concerns, and disputes.

- Comply with all applicable local, state, and federal laws, policies, procedures, and guidelines.

- Assist exceptional and pre-kindergarten children in boarding and alighting from the bus and escort them across the street during pick-up and drop-off; lift children as necessary; ensure that a responsible adult meets age-appropriate students disembarking from the bus.

- Operate equipment including wheelchairs, tie-downs, seat belts, harnesses, mechanical lifts, and other adaptive devices as required.

- Support the driver in ensuring that seat belts, harnesses, and wheelchair clamps are secured as needed.

- Collaborate with parents and school personnel to ensure the safe loading and unloading of students; manage seating arrangements and maintain an updated seating chart.

- Work with the bus driver to document student information, maintain records, and complete route surveys.

- Attend in-service meetings and training sessions as required.

- Monitor and assist students while the bus is in operation.

- Stay informed about and assist in emergency evacuation procedures.

- Communicate with classroom aides, teachers, principals, and parents regarding student backgrounds, medical issues, and behaviors as appropriate.

- Utilize two-way radios for communication between buses and with the base in accordance with federal and local regulations and procedures.

- Perform related duties and other responsibilities as assigned by the Transportation Director and the Superintendent.
