Key Responsibilities

The Lead Histology Technician operates with a high degree of independence and is responsible for executing both routine and complex laboratory procedures that require advanced analytical, technical, and problem-solving capabilities. Key activities include:

  • Embedding tissue samples in paraffin or alternative media, slicing tissue blocks with specialized equipment to create glass slides, and staining slides using either automated systems or manual techniques.
  • Managing temperature monitoring systems and documenting necessary corrective actions.
  • Operating and maintaining laboratory instruments such as tissue processors, embedding centers, microtomes, cryostats, automated stainers, ovens, refrigerators, freezers, incubators, and other essential equipment.
  • Handling routine operational tasks, including preparing solutions, stocking supplies, disposing of hazardous materials, and maintaining records of tissue blocks and slide samples.
  • Conducting specialized services that necessitate advanced training and techniques, such as renal, muscle, and liver biopsies.
  • Performing daily checks on instruments, equipment, reagents, and buffers, documenting findings in preventive maintenance logs in accordance with established protocols.
  • Utilizing and adhering to quality control standards for testing methodologies.
  • Accurately identifying specimens and labeling samples with at least two identifiers at each stage of the laboratory process to ensure safety and quality outcomes.
  • Documenting Non-Conforming Events (NCEs), initiating problem-solving processes, and implementing corrective actions.
  • Reviewing and updating policies and procedures to stay informed of changes and supporting the implementation of new processes.
  • Identifying and addressing both basic and complex issues related to testing methodologies, quality control, and instrument troubleshooting.
  • Conducting parallel shipment testing for lot verification and assisting with the identification and selection of control tissues.
  • Collaborating directly with pathologists to meet the needs of specialized services.

Qualifications

Essential Requirements:

  • High School Diploma/GED; an Associate's degree from an accredited Histology Training Program or equivalent is preferred.
  • Histo Certificate (ASCP) is preferred.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience in a histopathology laboratory under the supervision of a licensed pathologist and certified histologist.
