Job Overview

Position Summary: Under the guidance of the Vision Rehabilitation Services (VRS) Director, the Orientation & Mobility Specialist (COMS) is responsible for delivering comprehensive assessments and training to individuals with vision impairments across various age groups. This role encompasses both facility-based and community-based training to promote safe and independent navigation in diverse environments, including home, workplace, and public spaces. The COMS also plays a crucial role in advocating for individuals with vision loss by engaging in community outreach, educational initiatives, and collaborative efforts with local organizations.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Conduct thorough O&M evaluations and provide tailored training to address the mobility requirements of clients in multiple settings, including facilities, homes, workplaces, and community areas. Establish personalized goals and objectives post-evaluation to facilitate clients' progress towards their maximum potential.
  2. Prepare and submit assessments, progress reports, discharge summaries, daily documentation, and invoices in accordance with established procedures to ensure reimbursement from various funding sources. Maintain accurate records of services provided to uphold effective communication with staff, referring professionals, and partner organizations.
  3. Deliver both individual and group training sessions for participants in specialized programs designed for older adults with vision loss, adhering to the program's established curriculum.
  4. Collaborate with VRS colleagues to design and implement services for youth within specific mobility programs.
  5. Work alongside the vision rehabilitation team to enhance communication regarding client needs and service plans across all Lighthouse initiatives.
  6. Facilitate sensitivity training for new staff members and conduct initial assessments for employees with vision impairments to identify their training needs for safe navigation within the workplace.
  7. Provide ongoing assessments and training for employees who are blind to improve their job performance and safety. Consult with management to address any identified challenges.
  8. Engage as a member of the Mo-Mobility team to improve pedestrian safety and public transit accessibility for individuals who are visually impaired or Deaf-Blind through system evaluations, educational workshops, and hands-on training for transit personnel and community leaders.
  9. Participate in advocacy and educational events aimed at promoting inclusivity for individuals with vision loss. Offer sensitivity training to local businesses and conduct environmental assessments for public spaces.
  10. Supervise O&M interns as per university guidelines to ensure effective learning experiences and contribute to the growth of the Vision Rehabilitation field.
Qualifications:

Educational Background: A bachelor's or master's degree from an accredited program focusing on Orientation & Mobility is required, along with certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist.

Skills and Knowledge: Expertise in assessing and instructing Orientation and Mobility in various environments; familiarity with visual impairments and their impact on functional abilities; adeptness in adapting teaching methods to optimize client progress; strong communication skills; proficiency in Office software and internet usage.

Experience: A minimum of 350 hours of experience in instructing individuals with varying levels of vision loss in utilizing adaptive strategies and mobility aids for safe navigation. Competence in conducting assessments and drafting professional documentation is essential.

Supervisory Duties: Oversight of O&M interns and volunteers as necessary.

Physical Requirements: Good physical health to support outdoor training in all weather conditions; ability to walk long distances and navigate public transportation independently; capability to manage transportation and training for off-site instruction.

Personal Attributes: Friendly, client-centered, adaptable; professional demeanor; creative problem-solver; collaborative yet capable of independent work; motivated educator who inspires clients and teams to achieve successful outcomes.

Work Environment: Varied settings including outdoor, classroom, client homes, and community venues. Frequent travel is required, with mileage reimbursement available for service-related travel.

Work Schedule: Full-time position with a standard workweek, including occasional weekend outreach and training activities.
