Job Summary

The Housing Authority of Savannah is seeking a skilled Maintenance Laborer to join our team. As a key member of our facilities team, you will be responsible for performing manual labor and a variety of unskilled maintenance tasks to ensure the upkeep of our grounds, buildings, and equipment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform cleaning tasks in buildings, including sweeping, scrubbing, mopping, waxing, and buffing floors, dusting, cleaning, waxing, washing, and polishing furniture and equipment, washing H.A.S. vehicles, washing windows and walls, emptying and cleaning waste receptacles, and cleaning bathrooms and replenishing necessary supplies.
  • Perform superficial repairs to water closets and drains, usually consisting of unplugging them and freeing them for normal use.
  • Visually inspect hallways and common places, eliminate any obstacles to free passage, and ensure that adequate lighting is provided at all times.
  • Clean up grounds by picking up paper and trash, carrying away debris.
  • Rake and care for grounds, prune trees and shrubbery to maintain a neat and healthy condition and appearance.
  • Sweep walks and parking areas and maintain in clean condition.
  • Load and unload vehicles, drive vehicles to and from various sites to transport trash, materials, tools, and supplies.
  • Report any unsafe or hazardous conditions encountered or observed on or in any Authority property or building.
  • Distribute flyers to residents.
  • Deliver, pick up, and install appliances in occupied and unoccupied units.
  • Maintain necessary records of appliance transactions.
  • Perform related work as required.
Requirements
  • Knowledge of building and grounds maintenance practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of ground maintenance tools and cleaning materials and supplies.
  • Knowledge of building maintenance.
  • Ability to operate equipment and trucks, including dump trucks and large-scale lawn mowers.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and applicable safety precautions of the assigned work.
  • Ability to read and understand written instructions.
  • Ability to follow oral instructions.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects.
  • Ability to work outside under adverse conditions.
  • Ability to perform manual work such as digging, shoveling, and sanding.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors, and the general public.
Physical Requirements

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Ability to operate a variety of carpentry, electrical, and plumbing equipment, tools, and machines.
  • Ability to work/inspect in wet, damp, hot, cold, or dusty places.
  • Ability to bend (90 degrees), stoop, crouch, climb (stairs and ladders), twist (to 180 degrees), turn, and kneel.
  • Ability to work while standing for extended periods of time on a recurring, repetitive, and often continuous basis in the course of performing job duties.
  • Ability to move or carry objects or materials such as sinks, counter tops, solid core and metal doors, debris, floor tile, fan motors, and other HVAC parts, etc.
  • Ability to handle ranges and refrigerators using appliance hand trucks.
  • Ability to lift objects up to 40 pounds from ground to over-the-head.
Work Environment

Works in office environment 20% of time; outdoors 80%. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. While performing outdoor duties of this job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time.

Minimum Education, Training, and/or Experience

Any combination of training and experience equivalent to the completion of the eighth grade and previous experience as a custodian or groundskeeper.

Special Requirements
  • Possession of a valid driver's license.
  • Able to be covered under the Housing Authority's fidelity bond.
