Birmingham, Alabama, United States Department for Transport Full time

Job Overview

At the Department for Transport, we understand the barriers faced by individuals with protected characteristics in the employment landscape. We are dedicated to fostering an inclusive workplace that champions equal opportunities. Our goal is to cultivate a workforce that reflects diverse backgrounds, including ethnic minorities, individuals with disabilities, and those with gender diverse identities.

Are you skilled in project execution and enjoy collaborating with a variety of stakeholders?

Would you seize the chance to contribute to a transformative initiative during a pivotal phase for our department?

If this resonates with you, we invite you to explore an exciting opportunity within the Manchester Route and Stations team.

Role Responsibilities

As the Sponsorship Lead for Manchester Piccadilly Station, you will play a vital role in advancing significant steps for Northern Powerhouse Rail (NPR) in a structured and strategic manner. Your primary duty will involve overseeing and enhancing the Millington to Manchester segment of the route, which includes the Manchester Piccadilly station. This position is crucial as the Department refines the project's scope, budget, and timeline.

This role presents both challenges and opportunities, contributing to a complex programme of policy advancement. You will engage with stakeholders across the NPR region and collaborate with partners, including Mayoral Combined and Local Authorities, business leaders, and key delivery collaborators.

Collaboration with various teams will be essential, focusing on Parliamentary consent, strategic assessments, the business case for the scheme, and the overall sponsorship of the initiative. Therefore, possessing political insight and meticulous attention to detail, alongside project management and leadership capabilities, is imperative.

You will be integrated within the Major Rail Projects Group, which promotes a culture of flexible working and inclusivity. We value growth and development, recognizing that no one is a finished product; thus, working within our Directorate will offer unique opportunities to enhance your skills and experiences.

Your Key Duties Will Include:

  • Assisting the Head of Manchester Stations in the broader sponsorship of the programme and acting as an informed sponsor, providing critical insights to HS2 Ltd regarding scope, budget, and efficiencies.
  • Leading the development of high-speed stations at Manchester Piccadilly, including overseeing the design process led by HS2 Ltd while incorporating feedback from stakeholders and the Greater Manchester Combined Authority.
  • Ensuring that the design for Manchester Piccadilly Station is cost-effective, delivers value for taxpayers, and aligns with the project's funding constraints.
  • Managing petitions related to Manchester Piccadilly Station, which may require travel to London during key phases of the legislative process.

For further details, please refer to the attached Role Profile.

Your organizational skills will enable you to effectively manage multiple, often competing, priorities. You will be passionate about delivering benefits to transport users and the broader community through investments in transport infrastructure and the regeneration it can facilitate.

As an articulate communicator, both verbally and in writing, you will have the ability to advise and influence senior stakeholders to achieve desired outcomes. You will navigate challenging discussions with confidence, ensuring your perspectives are communicated effectively while remaining open to feedback and alternative viewpoints.

Utilizing your strong interpersonal skills, you will foster and maintain positive working relationships within your team, across organizational boundaries, and with external stakeholders. You will be eager to learn and enhance your knowledge and skills for both personal and team development.
