About the Position

Job Summary: The State of Kansas is seeking a highly skilled Community Development Specialist to join our team. As a critical role in place-based community development, this position is essential for engaging Kansas communities, retention in workforce and youth, and the development of communities where companies want to do business.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement an overall strategy for placemaking and activating public spaces through various tools such as public art, landscaping, furnishings, wayfinding, recreation, public markets, tourism, culture, games, events, and signage.
  • Complete at least one placemaking project per region (eight regions) each year, fostering community engagement and economic growth.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to identify community needs and develop targeted solutions, ensuring the success of placemaking initiatives.
  • Manage and maintain relationships with community partners, local governments, and other stakeholders to advance the goals of the Community Development Specialist role.
  • Conduct research and analysis to inform placemaking strategies, ensuring data-driven decision-making and effective resource allocation.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field, such as urban planning, community development, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of experience in planning, community development, grant writing, evaluation, or project management.
  • Valid Kansas Driver's License and ability to travel from assigned workstation 80% of the time, with occasional overnight stays.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively and independently.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in planning, community development, grant writing, evaluation, or project management.

What We Offer:
