Position Overview

The City of Faribault is seeking a dedicated individual to perform proficient accounting functions that adhere to governmental accounting standards for the management of financial records and accounts. This role involves the preparation and processing of utility billing, accounts payable and receivable, cash receipts, capital assets, special assessments, and general accounting reconciliations, all with minimal supervision.

Key Responsibilities

Accounts Payable

  • Review incoming invoice payment requests for accuracy, compliance, and proper documentation.
  • Process accounts payable transactions and generate computerized check and ACH payments.
  • Prepare positive pay files and compile memo and check listings for council approval.
  • Reconcile monthly vendor statements and prepare monthly tax payments.
  • Maintain tax identification numbers and prepare annual 1099 forms.

Utility Billing

  • Deliver exceptional customer service to residents via in-person and telephone inquiries.
  • Calculate and process utility billing, including final bills, penalties, and adjustments.
  • Assist customers with payment arrangements and service inquiries.
  • Manage work orders for utility account connections or disconnections.
  • Prepare daily cash and accounts receivable reports as required.

Accounts Receivable

  • Process invoices and statements, ensuring completeness and accuracy of supporting documentation.
  • Monitor aged receivables and prepare annual special assessment listings.

General Accounting

  • Conduct daily cash reconciliations and maintain special assessment records.
  • Assist with capital asset management and prepare necessary journal entries.
  • Ensure reconciliations of subsidiary systems to the general ledger are completed.

Additional Duties

  • Provide backup support at the reception desk as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Two years of relevant accounting experience.
  • Proficiency in accounting software and data entry.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate degree or higher in business or accounting.
  • Experience in municipal accounting.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Strong organizational and mathematical skills.
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks efficiently.
