Position Overview

The Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) Office of Biometric Identity Management (OBIM) is seeking a Forensic Analyst Intern to support the Biometric Support Center (BSC). This role involves working with one of the largest fingerprint databases globally, known as IDENT, which houses over 250 million identities. The BSC team is dedicated to providing comprehensive fingerprint comparison services to various law enforcement agencies and related organizations.

Internship Responsibilities

The Forensic Analyst Intern will engage in administrative tasks for approximately 16 hours per week. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Assisting in the preparation of daily, weekly, and monthly statistical reports.
  • Reviewing and creating electronic file jackets while logging all incoming casework.
  • Conducting inventory assessments and disseminating reports.
  • Utilizing ULW to pull FBI prints.
  • Reviewing and distributing Lead Track Reports.
  • Creating tenprint cards from the customer repository.

In addition to the aforementioned tasks, the intern will receive training for an additional 10 hours per week in the methodologies of fingerprint comparisons, specifically the ACE-V methodology, and in conducting fingerprint transaction reviews and corrections. Upon successful completion of the training program, the intern will be expected to perform these tasks independently with a high degree of accuracy.

Internship Duration

This internship is structured for a duration of 6 months, requiring flexibility to work two 8-hour days each week, starting at 6 AM and concluding at 2:30 PM, including an unpaid lunch break.

  • Logging of Latent Print and Tenprint cases
  • Monitoring of Latent Print and Tenprint email accounts
  • Writing and disseminating Latent Print and Tenprint results reports
  • Creation of Tenprint Cards
  • Management of Inventory Property
  • Reviewing and disseminating Lead Track information
  • Retrieving ULW prints
  • Performing other tasks as required
Queue Related Responsibilities
  • Exposure to FSM
  • Training/CVT Queue Engagement
Required Qualifications

Candidates must be proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.) and web-based applications (Internet Explorer, Chrome, Google). Applicants must be currently enrolled as a Senior or be a recent graduate from a Forensic Science or Criminal Justice program with a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with Access Database, knowledge of professional forensic organizations (SCAFO, IAI, CSDIAI, etc.), and proficiency in Microsoft Access, Adobe Acrobat, and Adobe Photoshop are advantageous.
