Role Summary:

The Lead Radiation Therapy Specialist is responsible for providing direction, training, and mentorship to junior staff members, supporting departmental management, and executing advanced radiation oncology procedures. Under the guidance of the department manager, the Lead will develop training programs and orientation for new staff and students, review and suggest updates to procedural manuals, integrate innovative technical practices, and oversee collaborative projects. This role also involves assisting management in identifying operational challenges, proposing solutions, and enhancing both technical and patient service initiatives. Professionals in this position are expected to possess comprehensive knowledge and expertise in the procedures conducted within the Radiation Oncology Department. The Lead embodies the mission, vision, and values of Rush and adheres to all institutional policies and protocols.

Essential Qualifications:

  1. Minimum of five (5) years of continuous clinical experience, with a preference for two (2) years in a supervisory or senior role.
  2. Valid Illinois State License in Radiation Therapy.
  3. ARRT certification in Radiation Therapy.
  4. Current BLS certification.
  5. Bachelor's degree or advanced degree is highly preferred.
  6. Experience in training and mentoring staff.
  7. Specialized experience in a relevant field.
  8. Proficient technical knowledge and skills, including the ability to operate equipment and troubleshoot issues effectively.
  9. Strong interpersonal skills to maintain professional relationships with physicians, management, colleagues, patients, and their families.
  10. Positive demeanor and professional appearance.
  11. Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, to resolve conflicts and convey information clearly.
  12. Organizational skills to manage multiple priorities efficiently.
  13. Demonstrated customer service abilities, exercising sound judgment and creativity in problem-solving.
  14. Ability to work independently and take initiative.
  15. Flexibility to manage challenging situations and adapt to changing priorities.
  16. Capability to handle sensitive patient information with confidentiality.
  17. Proficiency in Radiation Oncology Information Systems and related software.

Working Environment:

  1. Willingness to work overtime, holidays, and weekends as necessary.
  2. Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, demanding team environment.
  3. Exposure to ionizing radiation, radioactive materials, and various patient demographics.
  4. Physical demands include lifting and repositioning patients and equipment.
  5. Subject to frequent high-pressure situations.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Oversee daily patient care and education, ensuring patient involvement in care decisions.
  2. Maintain patient confidentiality and explain treatment procedures clearly.
  3. Assist management in the smooth operation of the clinical area, including staff assignments and equipment checks.
  4. Collaborate with management to develop new techniques and resolve clinical challenges.
  5. Provide ongoing training and instruction to staff on updated practices and procedures.
  6. Utilize Quality Assurance programs to ensure high standards of treatment and patient care.
  7. Orient new staff and students to the department, ensuring adherence to safety protocols.
  8. Participate in professional development activities and maintain membership in relevant organizations.
  9. Contribute to the clinical education of radiation therapy students.
  10. Adapt to varying workloads and patient volumes as directed by management.
