Certified Respiratory Care Specialist

POSITION SUMMARY:
This role involves executing respiratory therapy techniques as per established protocols and physician directives to enhance the cardiopulmonary health of patients across all age groups, from neonates to the elderly. Respiratory therapists engage with patients in various settings, including intensive care units, emergency departments, and medical/surgical wards, while also extending respiratory care services to secondary care locations affiliated with Washoe Barton Medical Clinic. Responsibilities include performing 12-lead EKGs and outpatient respiratory assessments such as pulmonary function tests and overnight oximetry evaluations.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum Education Required:
- Graduation from an accredited respiratory care program.
- Proficient in the English language, encompassing reading, writing, and verbal communication.
- Basic computer skills.
- State Respiratory Care Practitioner License.
- Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) certification from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC).
- Current AHA certifications in ACLS, PALS, and BLS.
- Availability for on-call duties for a minimum of 7 shifts every 6 months.
- At least two years of experience as a Registered Respiratory Therapist in an acute care environment.
Policy/Procedures
- Ability to assess and evaluate each patient's pulmonary condition by reviewing medical histories, physical examinations, consultations, surgical reports, and relevant laboratory results. Conducts patient assessments through interviews and direct observation, including vital signs and other clinical indicators.
- Utilizes data and literature, along with patient and family consultations, to make informed decisions that enhance patient outcomes.
- Provides both physiological and psychological support in line with evidence-based practices and institutional policies.
- Documents assessments in patient medical records and departmental logs in accordance with established protocols.
- Maintains current knowledge of competencies, certifications, and training.
- Delivers comprehensive reports during shift changes or patient transfers, covering diagnosis, treatment plans, and relevant clinical information.
- Integrates respiratory care with other healthcare providers to achieve optimal patient results and ensures accurate documentation of all patient records.
- Accountable for the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care for patients across all age groups.
- Authorized to perform and assess respiratory care, initiate CPR, manage artificial airways, and engage with physicians as necessary.
- Direct patient care is a fundamental aspect of this position.
- As a member of the Code Team and Rapid Response Team, the Respiratory Therapist responds promptly to all emergency alerts and remains present until cleared by medical personnel.
- Participates in mock code scenarios.
- Responsible for the setup, safety checks, monitoring, and troubleshooting of respiratory therapy equipment.
- Maintains intubation trays and emergency equipment throughout the facility.
- Conducts 12-lead EKGs as per physician orders and ensures proper documentation in the patient's electronic medical record.
- Maintains annual competency in relevant diagnostic programs and devices.
- Schedules and performs outpatient PFTs and OPOs efficiently.
- Accurately documents results in the patient's electronic medical record.
- Participates in a minimum of 75% of departmental meetings annually.
- Completes annual competency assessments to stay updated with new developments in the field.
- Maintains all required licenses and certifications.
- Engages in continuing education to uphold state and national licensure requirements.
- Provides educational support to clinical staff as assigned.
- Completes all mandatory safety training and understands responsibilities related to workplace safety.
- Maintains a safe working environment and adheres to department standards.
- Demonstrates proper body mechanics in all job functions.
