POSITION SUMMARY:
The Clinical Nutrition Specialist oversees the dietary components of patient care. This role involves providing nutritional education and counseling to both inpatients and outpatients. The specialist coordinates clinical nutrition with food service operations to ensure effective patient care delivery. Responsibilities include preparing and supervising the implementation of all therapeutic diets and approving the diet manual. The specialist attests to the nutritional adequacy of all food served. Additional responsibilities may encompass community presentations, educational outreach, and participation in health events. Review of electronic medical records may occur off-site, while on-site presence is required for outpatient consultations, nutrition staff meetings, and as requested by clinical personnel.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum Education Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Dietetics or Nutrition from an accredited institution.
- Registration with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
- Licensure in the State of Nevada.
- At least 1 year of experience in a healthcare setting preferred.
POSITION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Assessment and Planning:
- Collects and analyzes nutritional data to recommend, prescribe, or adjust therapeutic diets to meet patient needs.
- Reviews patient data including diagnosis, age, sex, height, weight, laboratory results, medical history, medications, and other relevant information.
- Evaluates the nutritional status of patients at risk and formulates individualized care plans based on assessments.
- Collaborates with healthcare team members (medical staff, nursing, pharmacy, social work, etc.) to plan and implement dietary therapy as needed.
- Completes nutritional assessments and consults as required, adhering to diet therapy standards.
- Must be available as needed, including weekends and holidays.
- Ensures appropriate nutritional management for patients with specialized dietary needs or those at moderate to high nutritional risk.
- Calculates and develops meal patterns for specific therapeutic diets accurately.
- Modifies menus for patients with specialized dietary requirements or complex diet prescriptions.
- Monitors patient adherence to and tolerance of the nutrition care provided according to departmental standards.
- Evaluates and monitors patient responses to enteral and parenteral therapies, recommending modifications as necessary.
- Selects and recommends appropriate nutritional support methods based on physiological requirements and nutrition screening results.
- Determines suitable oral or tube feeding formulas to meet specific nutrient needs.
- Demonstrates the necessary knowledge and skills to provide age-appropriate care for patients.
- Teaches nutrition intervention principles to promote disease management and prevention.
- Provides dietary counseling and instruction to patients, families, and caregivers as requested.
- Educates nursing and medical staff on nutrition-related topics as needed.
- Plans and conducts group classes on nutrition for patients, the public, and professionals as requested.
- Reviews and develops patient education materials.
- Documents all relevant aspects of nutritional care in the patient medical record.
- Records nutritional assessment data and develops nutrition care plans based on departmental standards.
- Makes recommendations for nutrition interventions following accepted diet therapy guidelines.
- Enters chronological notes documenting changes and progress toward nutritional goals.
- Coordinates clinical nutrition with food service operations to ensure effective patient care delivery.
- Approves the therapeutic diet manual and all patient menus and nutritional supplements.
- Assists in writing and revising modified and house diets.
- Evaluates menus for nutritional adequacy.
- Provides in-service education regarding therapeutic diets to dietary staff and offers guidance in the preparation and serving of these diets.
- Participates in department staff meetings and other required meetings.
- Aids in the development and revision of departmental policies and procedures.
- May assist in the development and administration of a clinical nutrition quality assurance program.
- Participates in the evaluation of dietetic services.
