POSITION OVERVIEW:

This role is exclusively available to residents of Alaska. Please verify your eligibility according to our residency criteria.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

The individual in this position will operate State-owned or leased single-engine fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters, providing crucial support for law enforcement operations, Search and Rescue (SAR) missions, and additional assignments as required.

Depending on the location, the Aviation Officer 1 may be assigned to various roles, including:

  • Operation of light single-engine fixed-wing aircraft
  • Management of turbine aircraft

WORKING CONDITIONS:

This position is based in our Aircraft Section and operates from the local airport. The work schedule consists of 8 days on duty followed by 6 days off. Please note that this position does not provide housing or travel expenses for individuals residing outside of the local area.

Travel throughout Alaska may be required to provide aircraft support.


QUALIFICATIONS:

We are seeking candidates who possess:

  • Knowledge of flying maneuvers for day, night, and instrument flying conditions, with proficiency in piloting light fixed-wing aircraft
  • Experience with turbine engines

Additionally, candidates should have familiarity with aircraft maintenance procedures, including:

  • Conducting post-maintenance function checks on light fixed-wing aircraft and coordinating with maintenance personnel
  • Providing logistical support to facilitate the movement of aircraft between locations
  • Ability to make informed aeronautical decisions based on various inputs
  • Competence in assessing flight safety conditions and making go/no-go decisions
  • Proficiency in using web-based tools for pre-flight weather briefings, flight plan filing, and risk assessments

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants must submit a cover letter addressing how they meet or exceed the minimum qualifications for the position, including required licenses, aircraft experience, flight hours, skills, knowledge, and abilities. During the interview, candidates must provide:

  • A list of three professional references, with at least two from current or former supervisors
  • Last two performance evaluations, if available

Successful candidates will also undergo a pre-employment flight evaluation and must pass a flight check with a certified flight instructor.


ADDITIONAL NOTES:

This position requires the use or possession of a firearm or ammunition. Applicants with a misdemeanor conviction of domestic violence are ineligible for this position. A security clearance from the Department of Public Safety is necessary for this role, and individuals with felony or misdemeanor convictions may be disqualified.
