SAIC, a prominent Federal Government Contractor, is looking to fill a full-time role supporting the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) at the Environmental Modeling Center (EMC).
This position is integral to the Verification team within the Verification, Post-Processing, and Product Generation Branch (VPPPGB) in a dynamic and collaborative setting.
The selected candidate will engage in verification, validation, evaluation, and diagnostic assessments of EMC's Global Forecast System (GFS), employing scientific analysis techniques, numerical algorithms, and advanced software tools.
Effective communication of scientific findings will be essential, with responsibilities including both oral presentations and written reports directed at internal and external stakeholders. The role will involve direct collaboration with NOAA scientists, NCEP centers, National Weather Service (NWS) forecast offices, and academic collaborators.
Key Responsibilities:
The primary duties will encompass:
- Evaluating and analyzing the guidance from the EMC global forecast model, the Global Forecast System (GFS), covering both atmospheric and marine (ocean, wave, and ice) elements.
- Designing innovative methods and verification tools for assessing global model outputs using the EMC Verification System (EVS).
- Assessing the long-term performance of various GFS versions through objective methodologies.
- Validating the performance of new and emerging GFS versions, utilizing both statistical and subjective approaches.
- Collaborating with NWS field forecasters and NCEP National Centers to inform them of global model biases and forthcoming changes, while investigating reported global model issues.
- Providing general support for the verification of GFS outputs, including assistance with standard global forecast metrics recognized by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).
- Maintaining a comprehensive archive of global model and observational data.
- Engaging with NWS/NCEP/EMC and external partner domain scientists and engineers.
- Complying with DOC/NOAA/NWS Information Technology policies and procedures.
- Following project-specific software development guidelines and practices.
Qualifications:
A minimum of a Master’s degree or equivalent experience in atmospheric sciences, meteorology, mathematics, or a related physical science, alongside at least two years of experience in analysis, modeling, or monitoring of ensemble Earth System Models (ESMs).
Knowledge, Skills, and Requirements:
- Proficiency in verification methods and techniques for ensemble and deterministic Earth System Models (ESMs).
- Extensive experience with the Python programming language in a high-performance supercomputing UNIX environment, used for calculating ESM verification metrics and creating custom graphical representations of results.
- Familiarity with the FORTRAN programming language and graphical display tools such as GRADS, GEMPAK, MATLAB, IDL, etc.
- Understanding of common meteorological data formats, including GRIB2, NetCDF, HDF, BUFR, etc.
- Experience with model verification software systems, such as the Model Evaluation Tools (METplus).
- Demonstrated ability to use GitHub for managing software repositories and projects.
- Basic knowledge of web technologies and common languages (e.g., HTML, Javascript) for displaying ESM verification data.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to effectively convey results to scientists from diverse backgrounds in both oral and written formats.
- Capability to independently analyze, plot, and verify model outputs.
- Able to work both independently and collaboratively on complex challenges.
- Demonstrated organizational skills and attention to detail.
Desired Skills:
