Dayton T. Brown, Inc. is a recognized leader in the fields of Technical Publications, Logistics, Engineering & Test, and Military Mission Systems. We are seeking a Full-Time Technical Illustration Group Manager to enhance our talented team within the Technical Services Division.


This role entails overseeing a dedicated team of illustrators who provide essential illustration support for various customer programs. Key responsibilities include:

  • Planning and coordinating tasks with program managers across the division, ensuring that both planned and actual work are effectively monitored, risks are mitigated, and financial constraints are adhered to.
  • Evaluating and delegating illustration tasks to team members and leaders.
  • Utilizing the company’s content management and status tracking systems to project work, monitor progress, and capture quality metrics.
  • Ensuring that all illustrations developed meet or exceed specification requirements and align with the quality standards set by Dayton T. Brown.
  • Building and maintaining strong relationships with customers, which includes participating in virtual and/or in-person meetings to communicate status updates, risks, added value, and action plans.
  • Developing evaluation methods to assess program strengths and identify areas for enhancement.
  • Assisting with technical proposals in response to RFPs related to illustration and software solutions.
  • Supervising, coaching, mentoring, and further developing a team of technical illustrators.
  • Applying project management principles to measure both program and individual job performance.
  • Staying updated with the latest industry trends, technologies, and future developments in illustration.
  • Testing and evaluating new software and tools, providing analysis to program managers, and making recommendations to upper management.
  • Exhibiting strong oral and written communication, analytical, and critical thinking skills.
  • Demonstrating a solid understanding of business management and financial principles.
  • Effectively managing pressure situations and meeting tight deadlines.

The ideal candidate will possess proven experience as an Illustrations Manager within a technical publication environment. Additional qualifications include:

  • A 2 or 4-year degree in Illustration, Graphic Design, Mechanical Design, or a related field.
  • Over 10 years of experience in developing technical illustrations for commercial or military programs.
  • A minimum of 5 years in a management role.
  • Experience in developing technical publication proposals and understanding the associated impacts on illustrations, costs, and scheduling.
  • Expertise in creating technical illustration development processes and style guides for technical manuals and training products.
  • Thorough knowledge of technical illustration development standards such as S1000D, MIL-STD-3031, MIL-STD-40051, MIL-STD-38784, ATA 100, and iSpec 2200.
  • Solid technical knowledge and experience in creating 2D and 3D illustrations using software such as Technical Illustrator, IsoDraw, AutoCAD, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, Creo-Illustrate, Blender, and 3DS Max.
  • In-depth knowledge of vector illustration development and 3D formats including CGM, ISO, SVG, GLTF, and GLB.
  • Strong computer skills, proficient in all Microsoft Office applications. PMP Certification is a plus.
  • Willingness to travel as necessary.
  • Ability to obtain a DoD SECRET clearance if required.
