About the Opportunity

We are seeking a skilled and innovative Mechanical Engineer to join our team at Atomic 13. The ideal candidate will become our in-house technical expert on our groundbreaking first-ever commercial-sized shear extrusion press. This role will require extensive interfacing and excellent communication with an external press builder throughout the detailed design, build, and commissioning phase of the project.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the technical assessment of the commercial press during the detailed design phase
  • Lead the risk assessment of the commercial press during the detailed design phase and building phase
  • Maintain all press CAD documentation and line layout CAD for Atomic 13
  • Develop and maintain machine operating documentation for Atomic 13
  • Develop press maintenance, training (of operators), spare parts inventory, etc... for the shear extrusion press
  • Lead Design FMEA and Process FMEA for the shear extrusion press at Atomic 13
  • Assist with extrusion press commissioning
  • Lead initial shear extrusion press operation at Atomic 13
  • Collaborate with simulation team to guide engineering design, development, and risk management
  • Collaborate with design, engineering, and production teams to analyze and interpret simulation results to guide decision making for process design, improvements, and product development
  • Collaborate with design, engineering, and production teams to integrate simulation findings into practical solutions
  • Prepare technical reports and presentations to communicate findings to stakeholders
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, or a related field of study
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience with large metal forming machinery, preferably within the aluminum extrusion industry
  • Expertise and experience working with large motors driven systems, both hydraulics and servo-hydraulic systems
  • Expertise and experience working with large tonnage presses, >20 MN
  • Understanding of aluminum extrusion processes, materials science, and mechanical properties of metals
  • Experience using FMEA methodologies to manage risks related to new equipment designs and well as new processes
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment and communicate complex technical information clearly
  • Meticulous with respect to documentation and organization of large CAD datasets
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality work
Preferred Skills
  • Experience with extrusion modelling tools such as Altair Inspire, Qform, Simufact, Deform
  • Linear stress analysis using FEA tools and general stress analysis of heavy machine framing/componentry
  • Experience with industrial control systems/sensors used in heavy manufacturing industries
  • Shop floor/hands-on experience within the metal extrusion or metal forging industries
