Museum Maintainer/HVAC Technician Job Description

The American Museum of Natural History is seeking a skilled Museum Maintainer/HVAC Technician to join our Facilities Operations team. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for performing preventative maintenance and service of all heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment, including system components related to HVAC, such as pneumatic systems, pumps, compressors, cooling towers, and all components of the chilled water and condenser water distribution piping systems.

You will also perform preventative maintenance and service of steam system (including condensate) piping and components, which includes the repair of disabled equipment and associated components and replacement of existing equipment. Additionally, you will be responsible for continuous rounds through the physical plant and campus, documenting temperature, humidity, and pressure readings vital to the environmental conditions required by the science collections storerooms, exhibition halls, and public spaces throughout the Museum.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in HVAC maintenance and repair, with experience working with centrifugal chillers and associated mechanical equipment. You will also have a working knowledge of HVAC controls and be able to perform tasks requiring physical strength and high manual dexterity. Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform preventative maintenance and service of all heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment
  • Perform preventative maintenance and service of steam system (including condensate) piping and components
  • Document temperature, humidity, and pressure readings vital to the environmental conditions required by the science collections storerooms, exhibition halls, and public spaces throughout the Museum
  • Respond to all HVAC emergencies and other emergencies as required

Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Valid NYC Fire Department Refrigeration Operator's License
  • Three years of experience in relevant maintenance work or equivalent
  • One year of experience with centrifugal chillers and associated mechanical equipment
  • Working knowledge of HVAC controls
  • Ability to perform tasks requiring physical strength and high manual dexterity

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Technical, trade, or vocational education

Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) for prolonged periods
  • Must be able to occasionally lift up to 20 pounds
  • Must be able to move about the Museum campus
