About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Public Works Assistant Director to join our team at the City of Rapid City, SD. As a key member of our Public Works Department, you will play a critical role in shaping the future of our city's infrastructure and services.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead a diverse team of professionals in the Public Works Department, providing guidance and support to ensure seamless operations and high-quality services.
  • Develop and implement policies, review budgets, and spearhead long-term goals and capital improvement programs that will impact Rapid City for generations to come.
  • Provide expert advice to the Mayor, City Council, and other department leaders, ensuring that our city's interests are well-represented.
  • Drive innovation and lead special projects that push the boundaries of what's possible in public works, guiding the planning, development, and execution of key initiatives.
  • Represent the City of Rapid City in discussions with public and private organizations, fostering strong relationships and partnerships.
  • Build a strong team by hiring, training, and managing staff, fostering a supportive and effective work environment.
Requirements
  • A Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Public Administration, or a related field, along with eight (8) years of experience in a related field, or a Master's degree with five (5) years of experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams, manage complex projects, and navigate the challenges of municipal operations with grace and efficiency.
  • Innovative mindset with a deep understanding of public sector management, municipal administration, and the unique challenges of an aldermanic government structure.
  • Problem-solving skills, comfortable handling challenges and finding practical solutions, especially in a fast-paced environment.
  • Mechanical aptitude, with technical skills to understand and oversee the complex systems within the Public Works divisions.
