About the Role

The Smithsonian Institution is seeking a highly skilled Conservator to join our team. As a Conservator, you will play a critical role in the preservation and conservation of our vast collections of natural science and anthropological artifacts.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide conservation services, guidance, and assistance to Office of Exhibits and relevant Departmental contacts.
  • Advise on the work of exhibit fabricators, installation process, and prepares condition reports for collections items placed on exhibit.
  • Advise and assist the museum staff at all levels, and occasionally the public and personnel of other museums within and outside of the Smithsonian Institution, on the handling, storage, loan, exhibition, analysis and preservation of museum collections and related material.
  • Advise and determine long and short-term goals, plans and projects for museum conservation, taking into account construction, exhibition, education, research and other programs, and projects of the museum.
  • Examine collections to identify the nature and extent of actions required for stabilization, preservation, and /or repair or treatment.
  • Develop written conservation guidelines and participate with teams involved with facilities management, renovation, and construction regarding collections issues.

Working Conditions

This position works primarily in an office environment but will also work in collections spaces and in a laboratory setting that involves some physical exertion such as: long periods of standing; recurring bending, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities; use of physical force and strength in handling objects; and tremor-free manipulations under the microscope.

Qualifications

Experience for GS-12: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal Service.
