Compensation: $21.70 per hour
Role SummaryThe Library Specialist plays a crucial role in enhancing patron experiences by providing exceptional and tailored assistance at various community locations.
Key ResponsibilitiesPatron Support (50%):
- Welcome and assist library visitors, offering proactive support in diverse community settings.
- Deliver personalized advisory services to patrons.
- Facilitate home delivery and mail services for library materials.
- Address library account inquiries and assist with basic reference questions.
- Connect patrons with library staff for further assistance as needed.
- Promote library resources and engage in program implementation.
- Gather and relay patron feedback through appropriate channels.
- Establish expectations for library use and resolve patron concerns effectively.
- Maintain a tidy and inviting library space.
Technology Assistance:
- Support patrons with basic technology inquiries and troubleshooting.
- Guide patrons in utilizing library technology, including e-books and online databases.
- Troubleshoot library equipment and connect patrons with staff for advanced needs.
Material Management (25%):
- Assist in managing the library materials collection.
- Process and shelve library materials and holds.
- Handle book carts and boxes at various locations.
- Curate library displays and merchandise materials effectively.
Driving Responsibilities (15%):
- Operate Library District vehicles to service locations.
- Conduct safety inspections and ensure vehicle serviceability.
- Adhere to traffic regulations and maintain vehicle fuel levels.
- Comply with Department of Transportation regulations for commercial vehicles.
Professional Development (10%):
- Stay informed on new library resources and technology trends.
- Proactively enhance skills to better assist patrons.
- Maintain awareness of internal communications to support patrons and colleagues.
- Foster positive relationships with coworkers and collaborate to meet community needs.
- Provide constructive feedback to supervisors regularly.
- Assist in crafting activities for patron engagement.
- Support Mobile Library Services events and programs.
- Participate in summer reading initiatives.
- Engage in volunteer coordination and display creation.
Minimum Requirements:
- Two years of experience in customer service, library, or educational settings.
- Ability to engage with diverse demographics, including international cultures.
- Valid Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record.
- Current Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or ability to obtain one within six weeks of hire.
- Capability to pass physical and drug screenings for CDL maintenance.
- Flexibility to work in varying shifts, including evenings and weekends.
- Intermediate technology skills, including file management and internet navigation.
- Ability to communicate effectively and engage patrons positively.
- Commitment to the core values of public libraries, including equity and intellectual freedom.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree.
- Experience driving larger vehicles.
- Conversational fluency in Spanish is strongly preferred.
Ability to work in varying conditions, including indoor and outdoor environments. Moderate noise levels and the need to adapt to fluctuating temperatures are expected.
Physical RequirementsEssential physical activities include:
- Remaining stationary for 25-50% of the time.
- Moving around for 50-75% of the time.
- Lifting up to 40 lbs. and carrying up to 20 lbs.
- Pushing and pulling carts weighing up to 100 lbs.
- Kneeling, crouching, and reaching frequently.
