POSITION SUMMARY:

The Underwriting Manager oversees a team of Underwriting Associates focused on National Accounts Property Risk Management. This role is responsible for the preparation and analysis of renewal and new business data, which is crucial for making informed underwriting decisions throughout the account lifecycle, from submission to policy issuance, in alignment with established underwriting strategies and guidelines.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Supervises the work activities, performance, and development of Underwriting Associate staff supporting a team of Underwriters.
  • Mentors, leads, and develops Underwriting Associates while contributing to the design of UA training programs, including the delegation of underwriting authority.
  • Advises on underwriting policies, processes, and workflows to management, collaborating with stakeholders such as department leadership and Operations for process improvements and efficiencies.
  • Evaluates and manages the application of underwriting policies, conducts risk analysis, maintains file documentation, calculates pricing, and prepares quotes within the context of a team of underwriters' portfolios.
  • Enhances business reporting capabilities and prepares operational reports for management review.
  • Champions business unit initiatives and strategies, ensuring Underwriting Associates adhere to their role responsibilities and workflow expectations.
  • Builds and nurtures relationships with agencies and brokers to secure positive and profitable outcomes.
  • Stays informed on line of business strategies, market trends, regulatory issues, and other relevant developments.

Reporting Structure:
Reports to Director or higher.

Required Skills and Qualifications:
  • Proven ability to lead, coach, and develop underwriting personnel.
  • Advanced technical knowledge and expertise in underwriting principles, practices, and procedures.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, negotiation, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to effectively engage with all levels of internal and external business partners.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities, with the ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects.
  • Adaptability to a dynamic, fast-paced work environment that emphasizes continuous learning and development.
  • Competence in navigating ambiguous situations and resolving complex business challenges.
  • Proven track record of achieving business objectives.
  • Experience in a collaborative work environment.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel) and other business-related software.

Education & Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience; professional designations are preferred.
  • Typically requires a minimum of eight years of underwriting experience.
