Position Overview
The Senior Underwriter will operate within defined parameters to assess, review, and oversee new and renewal accounts for a variety of financial entities, including private banks, insurance firms, hedge funds, and investment advisors. The role encompasses management liability, professional liability insurance, and related services.
In this capacity, Senior Underwriters will utilize independent judgment to manage underwriting processes, typically holding an Underwriting Authority of $3 to $5 million while developing a portfolio of new and renewal business.
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will possess a hands-on technical expertise with a proven track record in a leading Commercial Insurance Carrier, particularly in building a portfolio focused on Financial Institutions Management and Professional Liability (E&O, D&O, EPLI, FLI, and Crime) within the Lower Middle Market.
Strong connections within Financial Institutions retail broker channels and comprehensive experience in portfolio management are essential, covering all aspects from submission solicitation to underwriting analysis, as well as preparing and issuing proposals and marketing materials.
Additionally, the candidate should exhibit executive presence, demonstrating effective communication, influence, and relationship-building skills that enhance the AXIS business portfolio and support long-term strategic goals.
Work Environment
This role offers a flexible schedule, allowing for remote work two days a week while requiring on-site presence for three days. Maintaining strong relationships with brokers and clients, alongside participation in industry and corporate events, will involve some travel.
Key Responsibilities
- Identify new business opportunities and collaborate with Key Financial Institutions Retail Brokers to ensure proposals are submitted.
- Evaluate national new and renewal business in accordance with company underwriting guidelines, developing strategies and recommendations.
- Assess coverage requests from agents and determine departmental positions within granted authority.
- Analyze and underwrite individual risks, establishing appropriate limits, retention, pricing, and endorsements.
- Manage a personal portfolio concerning new lines, renewals, and cross-marketing of products.
- Meet divisional service objectives, including quote turnaround and policy issuance, while maintaining data integrity.
- Conduct regular marketing calls and broker visits to solicit new accounts and gather market intelligence.
- Manage select agency relationships to achieve departmental objectives.
- Engage in necessary travel for marketing and client meetings.
- Continuously enhance product and underwriting knowledge.
- Stay informed about economic and legal factors affecting the insurance industry.
- Participate in projects or perform related duties as required.
- Coordinate with branch marketing and profit center representatives for cross-marketing opportunities.
- Bachelor's degree.
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in Financial Institutions executive liability underwriting.
- Advanced technical knowledge of insurance and underwriting principles and practices.
- Experience assessing company financials and managing individual portfolios.
